Add or Remove Private Labels on Mobile Devices

You can add private labels to locations in the Google Maps app on Android, iPhone, and iPad. The steps for doing this remain the same regardless of the device you use.

Adding a Private Label in Google Maps

To add a new private label, open the Google Maps app on your mobile device and search for the location you want to save using the search bar. Tap the result when it appears in the list.

Alternatively, press and hold on any location in the map view.

In the Google Maps mobile app, search for a location, then tap the result in the search results.

This will bring up an information carousel at the bottom. Tap the name of the location to view the full information panel.

After searching for a location in Google Maps, tap the location name in the information carousel at the bottom.

In the information panel, tap the "Label" option.

Tap "Label" in the Google Maps information carousel to add a private label.

If this isn't visible, tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner, then select "Add Label" from the drop-down menu.

In the "Add Label" menu, provide a label name in the "Enter A Label" box. You can also tap one of the auto-generated suggestions (such as "Home" or "Work") from the "Suggestions" list provided.

To add it as a label, tap the "Add Label" option that appears beneath.

In the "Add Label" menu, type a label in the available box, then tap the "Add Label" option underneath.

Add, Edit, or Remove Private Labels on Windows or Mac

If you're using Google Maps in your web browser on a Windows 10 PC or Mac, you can add private labels using the search tool. The labels you add are saved to your Google account and are only visible to yourself—they can't be shared with others.

Adding a Private Label in Google Maps

To add a private label, open the Google Maps website in your web browser. Using the search bar, search for a location you want to add as a label.

This can be an address, postal code, town, or business location.

How to Send Apps Between Android Devices

Smartphone apps and games are a big part of our lives, so it's natural to want to spread the news when you find one that you particularly enjoy. Android makes it easy to share apps with other Android users.

We can do a lot better than simply telling someone the name of an app and making them search for it. There are a couple of different methods you can use to easily send an app or game directly to other Android users.

Send with "Nearby Share"

"Nearby Share" is an Android feature similar to AirDrop on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. You don't need to exchange contact info or be on the same network as someone to send them something. They just need to be physically nearby.

RELATED: What Is Android Nearby Share, and Does It Work Like AirDrop?

The Google Play Store has Nearby Share functionality built in for sending apps and games to people. This method is nice because it sends the actual file through the app store, which means that the recipient can quickly install it without manually downloading it first.

First, open the Play Store app on your Android phone or tablet. Tap the hamburger menu in the top-left to open the overflow menu.

tap the menu icon

Next, select "My Apps & Games" from the menu.

go to My Apps and Games

You'll be brought to the "Updates" tab on the My Apps & Games page. Switch to the "Share" tab.

navigate to the share tab

Tap the "Send" button to begin the process with Nearby Share.

tap the send button

You may be asked to give the Google Play Store access to your location. Tap "Continue."

continue to allow permissions

Then, select one of the permission choices to proceed.

select a location permission

Next, you'll see a list of all the apps and games installed on your device. Select any that you wish to share, then tap the send icon in the top-right corner.

select apps and tap the send icon

Now, the person who is receiving will need to open the Play Store as well and head to the "Share" tab. However, they will select "Recieve."

recipient taps recieve
Receiving device

Once you see their device show up, select it.

select the receiving device

A pairing code will appear on your device and theirs. Let them know what the code is and that they can tap "Receive" if it matches.

tap receive if the code matches
Receiving device

The app(s) will be sent, and they can tap the "Install" button to get it. Since you sent the actual app file, it will install quickly.

install apps on the receiving end
Receiving device

That's it! You both can now disconnect.

Share a Direct Link from the Google Play Store

This second method is more low-tech, but it works if the recipient isn't physically nearby.

Again, we start from the Google Play Store. Find the app or game that you want to share and tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner.

tap the menu icon

Next, select "Share" from the menu.

select share from the menu

Android's native share menu will open. You can either "Copy" the link and paste it in any messaging or social media app you want, or select an app to directly share it with.

copy the URL or pick an app

That's all there is to it. Whoever you send it to can click the link and be brought directly to the app page in the Play Store.

How to Delete Version History in Google Docs

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 08:17 AM PST

google docs logo

When you make a change to a Google Docs document, a copy of the previous version is saved. This allows you to roll back changes, but if you prefer, you can hide or delete the version history. Here's how.

Hide a Google Docs Document's Version History

Unfortunately, it isn't possible to completely hide the version history from other document editors or contributors without making a copy of the file first. If you want to limit access to the version history without doing this, however, you'll have to restrict access to view-only mode.

Users with view-only access to a Google Docs document can view the current copy, but can't see the version history or roll back changes. To switch your document to view-only mode, open your document and click the "Share" button in the top-right corner.

Press "Share" in a Google Docs document to access share settings.

In the sharing settings window, invite another user to view your file by typing their email address into the "Add People and Groups" box.

Type an email address into the "Add People and Groups" box.

Once the email address is inserted, the sharing options box will update.

Select "Viewer" from the drop-down menu, type a message to add to the invitation (sent by email to alert the user) into the "Message" box, then select "Send" to send the invite.

In the Google Docs sharing box, select "Viewer" from the drop-down menu, type an invitation message in the "Message" box, then press "Send" to send the invitation.

Alternatively, click the "Change to anyone with the link" option. This will give anyone with the document URL access to the document.

Press the "Change to anyone with the link" option to set sharing options by document URL access.

To ensure view-only access, select "Viewer" from the drop-down menu. To copy the link to your clipboard, select the "Copy Link" option.

Click "Done" to save your new settings.

Set the link viewer options to "Viewer." Press "Copy Link" to copy the link, then press "Done" to save the settings.

With view-only access enabled, anyone with the document link (or a direct invitation to view the document) will be able to view the contents of the file, but won't be able to view the version history.

Delete a Google Docs Document Version History

If you want to completely erase the version history of a Google Docs document, you'll need to make a copy of it. This will remove the previous, saved versions of the file, leaving only the current version available to any viewers and editors.

From a Google Drive Folder

To do this, open the Google Drive folder containing your document. Right-click the document, then select the "Make a Copy" option.

To copy a file, right-click the file in Google Drive and press the "Make a Copy" option.

A copy of the document (with "Copy Of" added to the filename) will appear in your document folder.

An example of a copied file in Google Drive.

In the Google Docs Document

You can also make a copy in your Google Docs document directly. To do this, open the document and select File > Make A Copy to duplicate the document.

To make a copy of a Google Docs file, press File > Make a Copy.

In the "Copy Document" box, provide a new filename and location for the duplicated file.

If you want to copy over comments or suggestions or share the file with the same users as the original, make sure to check the appropriate checkboxes below the "Folder" drop-down menu. When you're ready, click "OK" to copy the file.

In the "Copy Document" box, confirm the name, location and share settings of the copied file, and determine whether to duplicate comments and suggestions. Press "OK" to save.

Once you've confirmed your options, a copy of the file will appear in the document folder you selected.

Using the Version History Menu

If you want to copy a certain version of a document and delete all other versions, start by opening the Google Docs document. Next, click File > Version History > See Version History to view the version history for your document.

Press File > Version History > See Version History to view the version history of a Google Docs document.

Alternatively, select the "Last Edit" link, which is visible next to the "Help" option. This will only be visible for users with "Editor" access to a document.

Click the "Last Edit" link at the top of a Google Docs document to view the version history.

In the "Version History" menu, click the three-dot menu icon next to an entry in the panel on the right-hand side.

From the drop-down menu, select the "Make a Copy" option.

To make a copy of a version of a Google Docs document, press the three-dots menu icon next to an entry in the "Version History" menu, then press "Make a Copy" to duplicate that version.

In the "Copy Version" menu, confirm where you'd like to save the copied file and provide a new file name.

Select the "Share it with the same people" checkbox to share the file with the same users (if you wish to). Click "OK" to make the copy.

In the "Copy Version" box, confirm the name and location of the duplicate, and confirm whether or not you want to share it with the same users as the original. Press "OK" to save and make the copy.

The version of the file you copied will be saved to the folder you selected.

How to Disable the Mac Keyboard’s Emoji Shortcut

Posted: 26 Feb 2021 07:09 AM PST

Khamosh Pathak

Apple's MacBooks with Apple Silicon chips have picked up a new trick from the iPad keyboard. The Function key now acts as an Emoji picker. Here's how to disable the Emoji shortcut on the Mac keyboard.

If you want to use the function keys on the Mac (F1 to F12), you have to press and hold the Fn key. On MacBooks with Apple Silicon (2020 onwards), the Fn key has been redesigned. Now, you prominently see the Globe icon in the bottom part of the Fn key.

Khamosh Pathak

Pressing the Globe key once instantly brings up the Emoji picker in the middle of the screen, on top of all your active windows.

Previously, you would press the Fn key twice to use Dictation.

For some users, the Emoji feature might be useful. But it can also be annoying when the Emoji picker accidentally shows up when you're in the middle of work. However, you can disable this feature altogether or switch to using the Dictation feature (by pressing the Fn key twice).

But don't worry, you'll still be able to use the Emoji picker in text fields using a specialized shortcut. Just press the Control+Command+Space keys together to bring up the Emoji picker.

RELATED: How to Type Emoji on Your Mac with a Keyboard Shortcut

To disable the emoji picker key, first, we'll need to go to System Preferences. On your Mac, click the Apple icon from the left side of the menu bar, then select the "System Preferences" option.

Here, choose the "Keyboard" option.

Select the drop-down next to the Globe icon.

Select Globe Option from System Preferences

From here, you can choose a couple of options. You can use "Change Input Source," or you can switch to the "Start Dictation" option.

Choose the "Do Nothing" option to disable the Emoji keyboard.

And that's it. Now, when you accidentally (or intentionally) press the Fn (or Globe) key, nothing will happen.

Just because you have disabled the Globe key doesn't mean that it's the end of your colorful Emoji life on Mac. Read our ultimate guide to Emojis on Mac to learn how you can still use Emojis on Mac using menu bar or third-party apps and keyboard shortcuts.

How to Send or Forward an Email Directly to Slack

Posted: 25 Feb 2021 09:07 PM PST

Slack Logo

Slack offers integration options that let you connect directly to email services. But if you simply want to share an email quickly and easily, you can grab a Slack email address and forward it to your workspace.

Maybe it's a raving review of your company's product from a customer, or perhaps it's a list of project items for the team from your headquarters. Whatever that email contains, it can be shared with your Slack workspace, or even kept private as your own reference.

Obtain the Slack Email Address

You can obtain the Slack email address using the desktop or web version of Slack. So, sign in to your desired workspace in Slack.

Note: Guest users do not have this option.

In the top-left corner, click the arrow next to the workspace name and select "Preferences."

Click the workspace arrow and select Preferences

In the menu, select "Messages & Media" and scroll to the bottom of those settings. You'll see a section called "Bring Emails Into Slack" with a brief description of the feature. Click "Get a Forwarding Email Address."

Click Get a Forwarding Email Address

Once the email address appears, click "Copy" to place it on your clipboard. You can then use it right away or save it to your contacts for easy access later.

Click to copy to the email address

When you're ready, paste the Slack email address in your email client's "To" field and forward the message like you would any other email. You can also use the Slack email address if you want to compose a new message rather than forward one.

Share or Save the Email in Slack

After you send a message to the Slack email address, it will appear in Slackbot almost immediately. Access Slackbot under "Direct Messages" on the left. You can click the message to expand it and see the whole email, then collapse it when you finish.

Click Slackbot, then expand the email

To share the message, hover your cursor over the email and click "Share File" in the toolbar.

Click Share File in the toolbar

You can then search for or select a Slack user or channel. Remember, you can send it to yourself as well. Optionally, add a message and click "Share."

Enter a user or channel and click Share

To take a different action on the email, click the three-dot icon in the toolbar. You can then copy a link to the file, add it to your saved items, rename it, or delete it if needed.

More actions for the email

How to Uninstall Android Apps From Your Smartphone or Tablet

Posted: 25 Feb 2021 06:55 PM PST

google play uninstall button

With so many interesting—and free—apps in the Google Play Store, you're sure to download some that you end up not using. Keeping unused apps on your Android device can affect performance and take up storage space. Here's how to uninstall Android apps.

Generally speaking, any app or game that you install from the Play Store can be uninstalled. Exceptions to this include some apps that come pre-loaded on your phone or tablet. Sometimes you can "disable" these apps, but not always.

RELATED: What Is the Google Play Store?

Uninstall Android Apps

There are two ways to uninstall an Android app or game: from the Play Store or the home screen/app drawer. We'll cover the Play Store method first, which works the same way for everyone.

Open the Play Store on your Android smartphone or tablet and tap the hamburger menu icon in the top-left corner.

Select "My Apps & Games" from the menu.

select my apps and games

Switch to the "Installed" tab and find the app you want to uninstall.

From the app information page, simply tap the "Uninstall" button.

tap Uninstall

Confirm that you want to "Uninstall" the app from the pop-up.

confirm uninstalling

That's it! The app will be uninstalled.

The second method will vary depending on which home screen launcher you use and your device's skin. In most cases, you can tap and hold an app icon to bring up a contextual menu.

tap and hold icon

From that menu, tap "Uninstall."

select uninstall

A confirmation pop-up will ask whether you're sure. Select "OK" to delete the app.

confirm uninstall

Some launchers will have you drag the app icon to an "Uninstall" button. Others will have an option for "App Info" in the contextual menu, which takes you to a page in the Settings menu where you can uninstall the app. If you're not sure how it works with your launcher, just use the Play Store method.

Disable Android Apps

Some Android apps can't be uninstalled, but they can be disabled. A disabled app is not removed from your device, but it's not allowed to run in the background or appear in your app drawer.

Disabling is typically available for pre-loaded apps that aren't essential to the operation of the device. For example, if the Facebook app came pre-loaded, you probably can't uninstall it, but it can be disabled.

To do this, we'll first swipe down from the top of the screen (once or twice, depending on your phone or tablet's manufacturer) and tap the gear icon to open the Settings menu.

swipe down and tap the gear icon

Next, select "Apps & Notifications."

select apps and notifications

Tap "See All [Number] Apps" for the full list of installed apps.

Select the app that you wish to uninstall/disable.

find an app to disable

On the app info page, you'll either see the option to "Uninstall" or "Disable." Tap it.

tap disable

A pop-up will ask you to confirm that you want to disable the app. Tap "Disable App" to proceed.

confirm that you want to disable

If the app can't be disabled, the option will be grayed out.

That's all there is to it. A disabled app will remain on your device and can be reenabled at any time.

  • $4.99 per month with ads.
  • $9.99 per month without ads.

The company also plans to offer premium bundles with content from networks such as Showtime. Pricing may differ by country.
