Google Sheets

When you're analyzing complex data sets in Google Sheets, you can take advantage of its built-in sorting feature to organize the data. You can sort by individual columns or, for more complex data, you can sort by multiple columns.

To do this, you'll need to open your Google Sheets spreadsheet and select the data set you wish to sort. You can do this manually by selecting the cells using your mouse, or by selecting one of the cells in your data set and pressing Ctrl+A on your keyboard.

RELATED: The Beginner’s Guide to Google Sheets

Once your data is selected, click Data > Sort Range from the Google Sheets menu.

To sort data in Google Sheets, select your data set, then press Sort > Sort Range.

In the "Sort Range" option box, you can select how you wish to sort your data.

You can select the column to sort by, as well as whether to sort in ascending or descending order. Click the "Data Has Header Row" to be able to select columns by the header cell.

Click the "Data Has Header Row" checkbox to use column header labels during a sort in Google Sheets

By default, Google Sheets will only offer one column to sort by. To add multiple columns to your sort options, select the "Add Another Sort Column" button.

Press "Add Another Sort Column" to add an additional column to your Google Sheets sort.

When you sort by multiple columns in Google Sheets, the sort will take place in order from top to bottom. For instance, an example spreadsheet has product sales data with product names, sale dates, and prices shown.

If you wanted to sort this data by name and then by the amount sold, you'd want to select the product name column in column A (named "Product") first and the amount sold in column C (named "Price") second.

A Google Sheets sort options box with multiple columns added.

You could sort this in ascending order, starting with product names near the start of the alphabet at the top, then with prices sorted by the smallest amount. Select "A-Z" to sort this way or "Z-A" to sort in descending order instead.

You can mix and match these options, too. For this example, you could sort in ascending order for product names and descending order for sales amounts.

In the Google Sheets sorting options box, select "A-Z" for ascending order or "Z-A" for descending order.

Once your sorting options are set, select the "Sort" button to sort your data. The data in your spreadsheet will be rearranged following the rules set in the "Sort Range" options box.

An example data set in Google Sheets, sorted using the built-in sort tool.

For this example, the data above has been sorted with product names and prices both in ascending order. This is shown clearly with the monitor and mouse products.

Priced at $100, the monitor would come second if the sort was only performed on the "Price" column (column C). As the sort was performed on the "Product" column (column A) first, however, the sold monitor was placed ahead of the mouse.

Examples of sorted Google Sheets data using single and multiple-column sorts.

You can undo any of these sorts by performing another sort on your data set, by pressing the "Undo" button in the menu bar, or by pressing Ctrl+Z on your keyboard.

How to Measure Your Blood Oxygen Levels with Your Apple Watch

Apple Watch Series 6 Blood Oxygen App
Khamosh Pathak

On the Apple Watch Series 6 and newer, you can measure your blood oxygen levels right from your wrist. We'll walk you through it!

How Blood Oxygen Monitoring on Apple Watch Works

Apple states that the blood oxygen monitoring feature isn't intended for medical use. Rather, it was designed for "general fitness and wellness purposes." Unlike the EKG feature, the blood oxygen monitor didn't go through rigorous FDA testing and certification.

RELATED: What Is An EKG, and How Does It Work In The New Apple Watch?

There's a reason why Apple puts this warning upfront. The Blood Oxygen app on the Apple Watch isn't completely reliable. Compared to a simple finger-based blood oxygen monitor, it doesn't provide the most accurate results.

The inaccuracy is due to the fact that the Apple Watch measures your blood oxygen levels through your wrist. The wearable features four LEDs and photodiodes on the back of the watch. It fires green, red, and infrared LEDs onto the blood vessels in your wrist. The photodiodes then gauge the amount of light reflected back.

Apple has built a special algorithm engine that collects all this data to figure out how much oxygen is present in your blood based on color.

The Apple Watch can measure between 70-100% blood oxygen levels. Generally, 95-100% is considered the normal range. If you get consistently low readings (below 90%), this might be a sign of an underlying condition. Only a licensed physician can tell you for sure if something is wrong.

How to Enable Blood Oxygen Monitoring on Apple Watch

The Blood Oxygen app works on Apple Watch Series 6 and newer, running watchOS 7 or higher. You'll need to use an iPhone 6s or higher, running iOS 14 or higher, to enable the feature. This feature doesn't work on Apple Watches using the Family Setup program or for anyone under age 18.

The feature has to be enabled manually, during the Apple Watch's setup process. If you didn't get the prompt, you can enable it from the Watch app.

Open the Watch app on your iPhone. In the "My Watch" tab, select "Blood Oxygen."

Tap Blood Oxygen from Watch App

Here, toggle-On the "Blood Oxygen Measurements" option.

Tap Blood Oxygen Measurements

This feature automatically enables background measurements in Sleep mode. You can also enable it "In Theater (or Cinema) Mode" in the "Allow Background Measurements" section.

How to Measure Your Blood Oxygen Levels

Once you've enabled the feature, getting a blood oxygen reading from the Apple Watch is quite straightforward.

Press the Digital Crown on the right side of your Apple Watch to open the app galaxy screen. Here, select the Blood Oxygen app.

Open Blood Oxygen App on Apple Watch

Tap "Start" to begin the measurement. The process takes 15 seconds. During that time, rest your wrist on a table or other flat surface.

After 15 seconds, you'll see your blood oxygen levels. Tap "Done" to save the reading. The readings are also automatically saved in the Health app on your iPhone.

How to Get Accurate Blood Oxygen Readings on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch blood oxygen readings can be flaky and inconsistent. However, the following tips can help you get more accurate and consistent readings:

  • Your Apple Watch should have a snug fit; not too loose or too tight.
  • Make sure your Apple Watch lies flat against your wrist, but not on the bone.
  • When measuring your blood oxygen levels, hold your wrist flat and faceup.
  • Rest your wrist on a table or flat surface for the entire 15 seconds.
  • Keep your fingers open without moving or tapping them.
  • Remain as still as possible during those 15 seconds. Don't use this feature when you're moving around or in a car.
  • Don't tap the Apple Watch or interact with it when taking a measurement.

Blood Oxygen Measurement Issues

This should take care of the reliability issues. Apple also says that blood oxygen monitoring might be affected by other things. For example, it won't work if you have dark tattoos on your wrist, on areas with skin perfusion, when you're moving around, in cold weather, or if your resting heart rate is higher than 150 bpm.

How to View Blood Oxygen Data on iPhone

Once the blood oxygen monitoring feature is enabled, it will log data in the background. This background monitoring is what sets the Apple Watch apart from a regular blood oxygen monitor.

To view all blood oxygen data, open the "Health" app on your iPhone. Tap "Summary," and then choose "Show All Health Data."

Tap Show All Health Data

Tap "Blood Oxygen."

Choose Blood Oxygen from Health App

You'll see a chart with all the available data. You can switch between the daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly views at the top.

Blood Oxygen History and Chart

To view all data, swipe down, and then tap "Show All Data."

Tap Show All Data

Here, you'll see a reverse-chronological list of readings; tap one to see more details. If you want to monitor your blood oxygen regularly from the Health app, you can add it to the Favorites section.

How to Disable Recommendations on Google TV

Posted: 14 Oct 2020 11:45 AM PDT

The Google TV interface with recommendations crossed out

Google TV streaming devices have a Home screen stuffed with recommendations. There are many ways you can fine-tune these, but if you prefer a less cluttered interface, you can also turn them off.

The Google TV Home screen on devices like the Chromecast with Google TV is very different from the company's previous streaming media platform, Android TV. For one thing, you don't have as much control over how the Home screen looks.

If you enable "Apps Only Mode," you can turn off most of the recommendations, but there are still a couple of catches.

RELATED: How to Customize the Google TV Home Screen

First, Apps Only Mode also removes your access to the Watchlist feature and your Google Play Movies library. However, you can still cast from the Google TV mobile app. Second, the Search tab and Google Assistant functionality are disabled.

If you're okay with all that, though, just select your profile icon at the top right of the Home screen to get started.

select profile icon

Select "Settings" from the pop-up menu.

select settings

Select "Accounts & Sign In."

select accounts and sign in

Select your Google account (the same account connected to the Home screen).

select your google account

Scroll down and toggle-On the "Apps Only Mode" option.

toggle apps only mode

A confirmation screen will appear explaining everything that will be disabled in Apps Only mode. Select "Continue" to proceed.

continue

Your Google TV Home screen will now look like the image below.

apps only mode

The "Highlights" row at the top will still show a handful of recommendations, but everything else will be removed.

While it's disappointing you can't use Google Assistant in Apps Only mode, this interface still might be preferable for those who like to keep it simple. Only your installed apps will now appear on your Home screen.

Keep in mind that you'll have to disable Apps Only mode to install any apps or games on Google TV.
