How to Take a Screenshot on Android TV Posted: 25 Oct 2020 07:25 AM PDT You might not realize it, but your Android TV (or set-top box) can take screenshots just like a phone or tablet. Unfortunately, it's not as simple, but we'll show you a method that works. Some Android TV devices, like the Nvidia Shield TV, include a built-in tool for taking screenshots. However, most don't, so you'll have to get a little more creative to take a screenshot on those devices. RELATED: How to Take a Screenshot on Your Nvidia Shield TV This method requires a paid third-party app called "Button Mapper," which allows you to remap the actions of any button on your remote. To get it, open the Google Play Store on your Android TV, type "Button Mapper" in the search box, and then select the app when it appears in the results. Select "Install" on the app page to download it to your device. When it's finished, select "Open" to launch the app. When you launch it for the first time, the app will ask you to start the Accessibility Service. This is what allows the app to detect the buttons you're pressing; click "OK." In the Settings menu that opens, scroll down, and then select "Device Preferences." Scroll down and select "Accessibility." Find and select "Button Mapper" in the list. Toggle-On the "Enable" switch for Button Mapper, and then tap "OK" on the confirmation page. Back in the Button Mapper app, you'll see a Lock icon next to some of the buttons. These require the $4.99 in-app purchase to configure. Choose the button you want to use to take a screenshot; we selected "Menu Button." Next, toggle-On the "Customize" option at the top. You can then decide which button action you want to use to take a screenshot. We selected "Double Tap." Make sure "Actions" is selected at the top of the pop-up, and then scroll down and select "Screenshot." Now, whenever you use the button action you specified (double-tap, in our case), it'll take a screenshot. You can find your screenshots in the Photos & Videos app that's preinstalled on your Android TV or device. To move your screenshots from the TV to another device, the best method is to upload them to cloud storage. You can do this with a file manager app, like File Commander. Then, you'll be able to access your screenshots anywhere. |
How to Export Your Google Fit Data Posted: 24 Oct 2020 11:45 AM PDT Google Fit houses a range of your vital health data that you have recorded over the course of months or even years using your phone, which is why it's key to frequently back it up. With Google's data export tool, Takeout, you can extract a copy of your Google Fit in minutes. Here's how to use it. Head over to the Google Takeout website and sign in with your Google account. Click the "Deselect All" shortcut if you're only interested in Fit and don't want the archive to include copies of your data from the rest of the Google services. Look for "Fit" in the list and check the box next to it. Click the "All Fit Data Included" button to choose whether you want to back up your activities data, the daily summaries of your sessions, or both. The "Multiple Formats" option will tell you in which format Google will archive your Fit data. Now, scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit the "Next Step" button. Here, you can customize the backup process in a variety of ways. You can pick how you want Google to deliver the archive file to you, set up automatic exports every two months, the file type, and size. Once you're done adjusting these settings, select "Create Export." Google will start extracting a copy of your Fit data. You don't have to stick around as Google will let you know via email when it's done. Depending on how much data you have accumulated on Fit, this can take days or even weeks. You can also cancel the backup request with the "Cancel Export" option. When Google is finished creating a copy of your data, you will get an email with the subject, "Your Google data is ready to download." Inside that email, click the "Download Your Files" button to access your archive file. Sign in again with your Google credentials for confirmation. It will redirect you to your "Manage Your Exports" page, and the file should automatically begin downloading. In case it doesn't, you can manually grab the file by clicking the "Download" button next to the Fit export entry in the list. The downloaded ZIP folder will have an "archive_browser.html" document that will let you easily go through all the health data. You won't be able to read directly any information because the files will be in TCX or CSV formats. You can follow our dedicated guide for viewing CSV files. For TCX, we recommend importing the file into a GPS data reader, such as GPS Visualizer. With Takeout, you can also export data from other Google services like Gmail. |

How to Extract a High Quality Icon From a Mac App Posted: 24 Oct 2020 07:09 AM PDT Sometimes you're working on a project that requires a high-quality Mac application icon with a transparent background. Taking a screenshot doesn't capture transparency, and maybe you can't find one on the web. There's an easy way to extract a high quality icon directly from a .app file. First, using "Finder," locate the app you'd like to extract the icon from. You will need direct access to the application's ".app" file. If the app is located in your Applications folder, you can navigate there quickly by selecting Go > Applications from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Here's the secret to this technique. Each Mac .app file is actually a "package," which is basically a folder with a special format, and it includes files that make an application work. Inside each app package you can find resources, such as icons, that you can extract. So we're going to peek inside an app package next. Once you've located the app in Finder, right-click (or Ctrl-click) it and select "Show Package Contents." After that, the app package will open and you'll see a "Contents" folder. Open it. Within "Contents," you'll see several folders and files. Double-click the "Resources" folder to open it. By the way, while you're poking around inside an application package, be sure not to move or delete any files within. It could prevent the app from running properly in the future. Inside the "Resources" folder, you will find a file labeled "ApplicationIcon.icns." This is a special icon file that contains several different-sized icons for the app. Double-click the "ApplicationIcon.icns" file, and it will open in Preview. In the "Preview" app, you will notice that the ICNS file stores icons in multiple sizes. The largest one will be the first in the list (seen in the pane on the left), and it should be at least 256×256 pixels in size. Click to select it. Once the icon you'd like to extract is selected (usually the first, largest one), click File > Export in the menu bar. When the Export dialog pops up, enter a name for the file and decide where you'd like to save it. Then choose a file format. If you want a high quality image with a transparent background, select "PNG" from the list. (Also, make sure the "Alpha" option is checked. This ensures that the PNG you save will have a transparent background.) Then click "Save." Preview will export the icon you chose as a transparent PNG file. After that, close Preview app, and your new icon image will be waiting where you saved it. |

How to Adjust Photo Lighting with Google Photos on Pixel Posted: 23 Oct 2020 11:52 AM PDT Lighting is, arguably, the most important ingredient when it comes to taking a good photo. If you have a Pixel phone, you can fix lighting after the fact with a feature in Google Photos called Portrait Light. Portrait Light is exclusive to Pixel phones, starting with the Google Pixel 2 and newer. It allows you to change where the lighting source is positioned if the original photo is lacking. It's easy to use and surprisingly effective. This feature is specifically for photos of people, and won't appear as an option for images of pets or anything else. Make sure the Google Photos app is up to date before you use it. To get started, open the "Google Photos" app on your Pixel phone and find a photo that could use a lighting adjustment. We've found that Portrait Light works best on selfies. Next, tap the Edit icon in the bottom toolbar. Swipe from the right on the bottom row, and then tap "Adjust." If you can use it on that particular image, "Portrait Light" will be an option in the adjustment toolbar; tap it. A circular handle will float over the top of the photo, indicating where the lighting source is located. Simply drag the circle around the image to adjust the lighting. Under the photo, you can also drag the slider to adjust the brightness of the lighting. Tap "Auto" to move the lighting to a position that matches the original photo if you want to adjust the brightest from there. When you're happy with the lighting, tap "Done" to proceed. Finally, tap "Save Copy" to save your changes. Portrait Light can have a pretty remarkable effect on images that have poor lighting. It's a powerful tool that can help you get the most out of your smartphone's camera. |
How to Find Your Direction of Travel Using Google Maps Posted: 23 Oct 2020 10:45 AM PDT Google Maps is great for getting directions, but if you're off-road and can't find your way home, you'll need to improvise. Thankfully, it's possible to use Google Maps to find your direction of travel if you get lost. Here's how. This will only work if your Android or iPhone device has a magnetometer that can find your direction of travel using the Earth's magnetic field. Most (if not all) modern Android devices have a magnetometer installed, as do all recent iPhones. Finding Your Direction Using Google MapsYou can easily find your direction of travel using the Google Maps map view. These instructions will work whether you own an iPhone or Android device, but you might wish to calibrate your compass first to ensure your direction is as accurate as possible. RELATED: How to Calibrate the Compass on Android to Improve Device Location Accuracy You'll also need to ensure that location services are enabled on your phone to allow for accuracy in pinpointing your location and direction. In the Google Maps app, you should see a small compass symbol visible in the top-right corner, below the button for changing the map terrain and style. If the compass isn't currently visible, use two of your fingers to move the map view around to display it. The red symbol in the compass icon is pointing north, while the grey symbol is pointing south. Your blue beam icon will show your current direction of travel. In the example above, the current direction of travel is approximately east, as north is pointing towards the right-hand side. Using the compass icon as a guide, you can then move in the right direction, whether it's north, south, east, or west. Finding North Using Google MapsRather than manually move your map to face a certain direction, you can tap the compass icon to automatically point the map view towards north and south at your current location. This means that, as long as your blue icon has a beam that points upwards, you're heading north. If it's pointing downwards, you're heading south, etc. To do this, tap the compass icon in the top-right corner of the Google Maps map view. Your map position will move, with the icon updating to show that you're pointing north. After a few seconds, the compass icon will disappear from the map view. It will only reappear if you move the map manually, showing the correct north and south position to help you navigate. With the map view calibrated towards north, you can then change direction using your blue beam icon to help you. As long as the beam is pointing upwards, you're heading north. For instance, if your blue beam icon is pointing towards the left-hand side, then you're heading east. If you need to change the map view manually, the compass will reappear, allowing you to keep track of your direction of travel. |
