How to Write in Text Boxes Using Your Apple Pencil on iPad Posted: 31 Oct 2020 08:28 AM PDT Your Apple Pencil is more than just a drawing tool. It's also a keyboard replacement. Instead of typing in a text box, just write using your Apple Pencil. Your iPad will automatically convert your writing to text. The Scribble feature was first released in iPadOS 14. It works with all iPads and iPad Pros that support the Apple Pencil (all generations). And as you'd expect with Apple, it just works. There's no need to enable this feature. Write in Any Text Box on iPad Using Your Apple PencilIf you like to take handwritten notes, the Scribble feature will feel like a blessing. It will automatically convert anything that you write into text. All you have to do is make the text at least semi-legible. Apple is pretty good at transcribing the handwritten text. RELATED: How to Take Handwritten Notes on Your iPad Using the Apple Pencil All you have to do tap in a text field using your Apple Pencil (instead of using your finger or mouse cursor). You'll see a floating Pencil icon appear on the screen, instead of a keyboard. Now, write in the text field using your Apple Pencil. Once you have written a couple of words, lift your Apple Pencil. In a second or two, the words will disappear from the screen and they'll automatically convert into text. If you want to write more, you can continue to do so in the text field area. You can use the Apple Pencil to edit the transcribed text as well. Take a look at the last section to find out how it works. Write Longer Text Using Your Apple Pencil and Notes AppThe Scribble feature is great for quickly entering text in a small text field. But its biggest limitation is the size of the text field itself. If you want to write a paragraph or a page, you'll need to use a dedicated writing or notes app. Fortunately, the Apple Notes app comes with a built-in Scribble feature. Open the Notes app on your iPad and create a new note. Then, tap the empty part of the note using your Apple Pencil. By default, this will take you to the drawing mode. Tap the "Pencil" button found in the toolbar to see the Pencil options. From the Pencil toolbar, choose the Pencil with the "A" icon. You're now in Scribble mode. Just go to the top of the note and start writing with your Apple Pencil. Everything that you write will be transcribed to written text instantly. Select and Edit Text Using Apple PencilWhen you're writing with your Apple Pencil, the transcribed text won't always be perfect, or you might just want to edit some text. You can do this using your Apple Pencil and some gestures. Select Text with Apple PencilSelecting text is as simple as circling the word or paragraph. Once you complete the circle, you'll see options for Cut, Copy, and Paste. If you want to delete the text, tap the "Cut" button. If you want to select longer text, you can draw a continuous line under the text. Tapping a word twice also does the trick. If you want to select a paragraph, tap on the text thrice. Delete Text with Apple PencilTo quickly delete a word or couple of words, just scribble a wavy line over the words (like how you would scratch off a word on paper). Insert Text with Apple PencilTo write something in between written text, tap and hold your Apple Pencil where you want to insert text. This will make some space for you to write. Then, start writing in the available space. When you let go of the Apple Pencil, iPadOS will automatically merge the text. Add or Remove Spaces with Apple PencilTo quickly add or remove a space, just draw a vertical line. If you draw a line where this is no space, it will add one. If there's already a space, it will be removed. Don't like the Scribble feature? Here's how to disable it. |
How to Set Up and Use Home & Away Routines with Google Assistant Posted: 30 Oct 2020 10:05 PM PDT Smart home devices are great when they work automatically without your input. It feels like the future we've seen in movies. Getting this to actually happen isn't as easy it looks, though. That's where Google Assistant's Home & Away routines can help. The Google Home app allows you to create different "routines" for performing multiple actions with a single Google Assistant command. These can be very helpful for turning off everything at bedtime, staying on task during the workday, and more. The Home & Away Routines work differently, though. They're triggered by your presence in your home. You can set up actions to run when you (or someone else) leaves and returns. These are super useful if you have several smart home devices in your home. To get started, open the "Google Home" app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. If you haven't yet set up a routine, tap "Set Up Home & Away Routines." You'll see an introduction page that explains a little about what you can do with routines. Tap "Set Up" to begin. The first thing you'll be asked is if you have a Nest account. If you do, Google recommends you migrate it to a Google account. Tap "Yes" if you haven't yet done that or "No" if you don't have an account. If you have a Nest account, you'll be guided through the process of migrating your account to Google. If you don't have a Nest account, you'll go right to the Nest Terms of Service. Now that that's out of the way, we can start setting up routines. Each Home & Away routine has a tab with all of your connected devices underneath. Select a device you want to control when someone comes home or is away. There will be different actions available depending on what type of device it is. For example, a light or switch can be turned on or off. Keep devices at "No Change" if you don't want to include them in a routine. When you're done customizing the device actions for both Home & Away, tap "Next." Next, you'll need to enable your phone to act as a presence sensor. Google uses device location and sensors to know if anyone in your household is home or away. Tap "Next" to proceed. First, you're asked to grant the Google Home app permission to access your device's location. If you're comfortable with that, tap "Agree." A prompt will also ask you to grant the app location permission. This might look different from the image below, depending on which device you're using. You can also allow other devices to detect your presence, including Nest Thermostats, Protects, Detects, and Guards. If you don't have any of these devices, though, just tap "Next." If you do have some additional presence sensing devices, you'll see a list of them. Toggle-On the switch next to any you want to use, and then tap "Next." Finally, type your address, and then tap "Next." A pin will mark the location of your home on a map. Drag and drop the pin exactly on your home, and then tap "Confirm." That's it! Just tap "Finish" to complete the setup process. Other members of your household will have to grant the Google Home app permission to access the location of their phone if they want to be included in the presence sensing. Home & Away Routines can be helpful if you have a lot of smart home gadgets—especially Nest devices. It's also really nice to be greeted by all the lights coming on whenever you arrive home. |

How to View 3D Halloween Characters in AR Using Your Phone Posted: 30 Oct 2020 09:28 AM PDT Halloween is the time of year when people like to get a little spooky. Your home might already be decked out in ghosts and skeletons, but Google's 3D augmented reality (AR) objects can take it to the next level. You may not know this, but Google Search has the ability to put 3D objects in your environment through augmented reality. This feature doesn't require any special apps, it simply works from the browser on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device. RELATED: Become a Tiger King with These 3D Google Animals and Objects The 3D objects include dinosaurs, a wide variety of animals, planets, and other miscellaneous things. Google also includes a handful of objects specifically for Halloween:
To put these spooky (and silly) objects in your world, you can use the Google app (iPhone, iPad, or Android) or the Google website in a mobile browser such as Chrome. The objects can be found by searching for them. The terms you can use include "Halloween," "Jack-o-lantern," "human skeleton," "cat," "dog," and "German Shepherd." Next, after searching for your desired AR Halloween character, scroll down on the main results tab and look for the 3D object card. Tap "View in 3D" to see the object in full screen. From here you can move the object around your screen with your fingers as well as pinch in and out to resize the 3D character. To put it in your real-world environment, tap "View in Your Space." You will see a prompt to move your phone around to help the AR technology analyze the space and determine how much room is available. The object will then appear. You can move the Halloween object and scale it with your fingers. Tap the camera shutter button in the center of the screen to snap a photo. Drag the card open from the bottom of the screen to see related Halloween objects. Tap one to place it on your phone's screen. That's all there is to it! Go forth and add some of Google's 3D AR Halloween spookiness to your world. |

How to Use Sound Recognition on iPhone Posted: 29 Oct 2020 05:32 PM PDT Sound Recognition, first introduced in iOS 14, lets iPhone users with hearing loss receive visual alerts when the iPhone detects certain sounds like smoke alarms, sirens, door knocks, and dogs barking. It does this with onboard intelligence, so no network connection is required. Here's how to use it. First, open "Settings" on your iPhone. In Settings, tap "Accessibility." In Accessibility, navigate to the "Hearing" section and tap "Sound Recognition." In Sound Recognition settings, tap the switch beside "Sound Recognition" to turn it on. Then tap "Sounds" below that to choose which sounds to recognize. On the next screen, you'll see a long list of switches that correspond to types of sound your iPhone can recognize, such as sirens and water running. As of iOS 14, here's the full list:
Tap the switch beside each sound that you'd like for your iPhone to recognize. You can activate any combination of them, including all of them. After that, press "Back" once, then exit Settings. If you'd like to test the Sound Recognition feature, try searching for sounds like "fire engine siren" or "baby crying" on YouTube. When triggered, Sound Recognition will place an alert notification at the top of your screen. Later, you can see a list of these alerts in your iPhone's Notification Center. How to Quickly Launch Sound Recognition from Control CenterYou can also quickly enable or disable Sound Recognition using a Control Center shortcut. First, you'll need to add the shortcut to your Control Center screen. To do that, we'll need to make a change in Settings. First, open "Settings," then navigate to "Control Center." In Control Center settings, scroll down to the "More Controls" section and tap "Sound Recognition," which should have a green plus symbol beside it. After that, Sound Recognition will be listed in the "Included Controls" section at the top of the Control Center settings page. You can change the order of your included shortcuts by tapping and dragging the handle button (three horizontal lines) to the right of each item. After that, whenever you'd like to quickly enable Sound Recognition, just bring up Control Center and tap the "Sound Recognition" icon. Here's how to bring up Control Center:
When you tap the "Sound Recognition" shortcut in Control Center, you'll be shown a list of sounds your iPhone can listen out for. Tap each recognition item you'd like to activate, then tap outside the list area to close it. When you're ready to disable Sound Recognition, just launch Control Center again and tap the "Sound Recognition" shortcut icon to toggle it off. How to Change the Screen Saver on Android TV Posted: 29 Oct 2020 03:26 PM PDT Android TV might not be as customizable as an Android phone, but there's still a lot you can do to personalize it. One of those is choosing which screen saver to use. We'll show you how to change it up. Just like on a computer, the Android TV screen saver is what you see when the device is idle. By default, it displays high-quality photos, along with the current time and weather. There's a lot more you can do with this feature, though. There are dozens of screen-saver apps in the Google Play Store, so you can give your Android TV a brand-new look. Simply type "screen saver" or "daydream" (the old name for the feature) in the Search bar, and then install the one you like. After you install the one you want, it's time to set it as the screen saver. Select the Gear icon at the top right of the Home screen to open Settings. Next, select "Device Preferences." Navigate down and select "Screen Saver." At the top of the "Screen Saver" menu, select "Screen Saver" once again. Select the screen saver you want to use (ours is YoWindow). If you're using a screen saver from the Play Store, the options for that app will automatically open. Some will require more set up than others, though. Select your preferences, and then click the Back button on your remote. Lastly, you can tweak the following settings to change how the screen saver will work:
Unfortunately, you can't change the wallpaper on the Android TV Home screen. However, the screen saver is what you'll see most often, so choose one you really enjoy looking at. |
