RCS is the upgraded version of SMS that's available on many Android devices today. However, it's still not universal, and that can cause some issues. If you're switching phones, you may want to turn off RCS first. Like many things that have to do with Android, the RCS situation is a little messy. First, to take advantage of RCS features, you have to use Google's Messages app. There are tons of great third-party text messaging apps in the Play Store, but only Google's app can use RCS. Even if you do use Google's Messages app, your carrier can get in the way of RCS. Google is working hard to get around that, but it's still an obstacle for some devices. The last messy bit doesn't have anything to do with Android, but it does prevent RCS from being a truly universal standard. iPhones don't support RCS at all. They use their own standard called iMessage. Speaking of iMessage, you may have heard of iPhone users having problems receiving text messages after switching to Android devices. What happens is that messages keep being sent to the old iMessage account instead of going to the new phone. A similar thing can happen with RCS. Thankfully, Google says that this will only happen for up to eight days, but that's still a long time. There are a couple of ways that you can prevent this from happening. First, you can check to see if you're even using RCS to begin with. As previously mentioned, you would need to be using Google's Messages app. From there, open the Settings menu and look for "Chat Features."
If you see "Chat Features," that means that your device supports RCS. Open the "Chat Features" menu and check to see if it's enabled.  Simply turn the toggle off to disable RCS. You can now switch to the new device without any worries. If you've already switched devices, Google has a web tool that can deregister your number. This feature is called Intercom, and you can use it from any device that supports Apple's voice assistant. Although the Intercom feature is primarily designed for use in the home, it also works with the iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, Apple Watch, and CarPlay. What Is Intercom?Intercom allows you to send prerecorded voice messages to Apple devices, much like the short voice clips Apple has built into its Messages app. The feature is primarily designed for use with the HomePod and HomePod mini smart speakers, allowing you to send a message to every speaker in your house simultaneously.
You can also send messages to certain rooms, provided you've set up your smart speakers to reflect your home layout. If you have an iPhone, iPad, and/or Apple Watch, you can opt to receive Intercom messages on your devices, too. Intercom is meant to be used in the home, although devices like the iPhone can receive messages sent to your household even when you're out. You can opt not to receive these messages on your personal device at all, or to only receive them when you're home. To use Intercom, you have to turn it on under the Home app. Fortunately, not everyone has to be included under a Family Sharing plan. You can also authorize non-family Apple accounts to send Intercom messages within your home, which is ideal for shared homes or student housing.
When you send an Intercom message, the recording is played back on any target devices. There is no Siri speech-to-text, so make sure you speak loudly and clearly. How to Use Intercom with HomePod and MoreTo use Intercom, you must first enable it on your HomePod and any personal devices on which you want to receive messages. To do this, launch the Home app, and then tap "Home" at the top left. In the menu that appears, tap Home Settings > Intercom.
You can then choose whether to receive notifications on devices (non-HomePods) in the "Receive Notifications When" section. Make sure you enable any HomePod speakers listed at the bottom of the menu, along with anyone in your home you want to have access to the Intercom feature.
