How to Use Outlook’s “My Templates” Add-in For Quick Text Entry Posted: 31 Dec 2020 07:27 AM PST Almost everyone who uses email at work types the same phrases multiple times a day. Save time by using "My Templates," Microsoft Outlook's add-in for one-click text entry, to store and add phrases of your choice. "My Templates" is a simple but effective tool for storing phrases and letting you add them into an email with a single click. It is an Outlook add-in, but it's installed automatically in both the Outlook client and the Outlook web app as long as your email account uses a Microsoft Exchange server. This includes Outlook.com and M365/O365 subscriptions. The text you add to "My Templates" is synced automatically between the Microsoft Outlook client and the Outlook web app, and the tool works identically in both. The process to open "My Templates" is slightly different in the client and web app, but once it's open, it works the same way. How to Open "My Templates" in the Outlook Desktop ClientOpen a new email in the Microsoft Outlook desktop application (or reply to or forward an existing message,) and in the "Message" tab, click "View Templates." The "My Templates" panel will open on the right-hand side of the email. How to Open My Templates in the Outlook Web AppOpen a new email in the Microsoft Outlook web app (or reply to or forward an existing message), click the three-dot menu icon at the bottom of the email, and choose "My Templates" from the menu. The "My Templates" panel will open on the right-hand side of the email. How to Use "My Templates" in Microsoft OutlookFrom this point onwards, we'll use Outlook's desktop client to demonstrate how "My Templates" works, but it's exactly the same in the web app. "My Templates" comes with a few preconfigured phrases out of the box that might be useful for you, but let's add our own. To do this, click "Template." Enter a title for the phrase, the phrase itself, and click "Save." The template will immediately be available. To use it, make sure your cursor is in the body of an email and click the phrase to add it to the email. It really is that simple. To edit or delete a template phrase, hover over it with your mouse or touchpad cursor to display the "Delete" and "Edit" options. There is no formatting available in "My Templates" except the ability to use Ctrl+B (Cmd+B on Mac) for bold, Ctrl+I (Cmd+I on Mac) for italics, and Ctrl+U (Cmd+U on Mac) for underlining, so no changing the font or color or adding hyperlinks, but that's what full email templates are for. |
How to Get Started With Google TV Posted: 31 Dec 2020 06:02 AM PST The Chromecast with Google TV introduced the company's vision for its smart TV devices. If you have a streaming device running Google TV, there are some things you should know. We'll help you get the most out of your experience. One thing to note before we get started: Google TV is not the same as Android TV. While both are based on the Android operating system, they function very differently. You can think of Google TV as the new version of Android TV. RELATED: What’s the Difference between Google TV and Android TV? How to Install Apps and Games on Google TVFirst and foremost, your Google TV experience will really only be as good as the apps and games you have. After all, Google TV is simply a delivery system for streaming media and games. Installing apps and games on Google TV can be a little annoying. The Google Play Store, which is where all the apps and games are from, is not easily accessible. Instead, you have to use the "Apps" tab on the home screen. RELATED: How to Install Apps and Games on Google TV Once you're there, it's a matter of browsing the categories, looking through the recommendations, or doing a direct search for an app or game you have in mind. How to Uninstall Apps and Games on Google TVInevitably, you'll want to remove apps and games as well. Maybe you've tried an app and decided you don't like it, or perhaps you want to remove a service that came pre-installed on the device. Whatever the reason may be, it's easy to do. Uninstalling apps and games on Google TV can be done right from the home screen. All you have to do is select an app and long-press to bring up the menu. Don't let little-used apps clog up your device. RELATED: How to Uninstall Apps and Games on Google TV How to Customize the Google TV Home ScreenSpeaking of apps and games, the home screen is where you'll find them, along with a boatload of recommendations. The Google TV experience is largely focused on recommending content for you. There are a number of ways that you can customize how the home screen looks. Since it's based so much on recommendations, the best thing to do is help it make those recommendations better. You can do this by adding your streaming services and rating movies and TV shows. RELATED: How to Customize the Google TV Home Screen The apps and games can also be organized to your liking. It's a good idea to put your favorites within easy reach. If all of that isn't good enough or you just plain don't like the recommendations, you can switch to "Apps Only Mode." This will turn off all the recommendations and only show your apps and games. RELATED: How to Disable Recommendations on Google TV How to Use Google Photos as the Screen Saver on Google TVWhen you're not actively using your Google TV device, it can act as a digital photo frame. When you're setting up the device for the first time, it may ask if you want to use Google Photos in "Ambient Mode." This is what we normally think of as a "screen saver." Setting up the Google Photos screen saver is not actually done on the TV device. Instead, it happens in the Google Home app for iPhone, iPad, and Android. You can specify which albums you want to see on the screen saver, along with some other options. If you're a Google Photos user, this is a really nice way to display your photos on a big screen. RELATED: How to Use Google Photos as the Screen Saver on Google TV How to Change the Screen Saver on Google TVIf you're not a Google Photos user, you can choose from a number of other screen saver apps. The Chromecast with Google TV makes this process a little tricky, unfortunately. Google TV is still Android at the core, which means that it can use Android screen saver apps. Google TV settings make it hard to find the screen saver options. You'll have to access them from the screen saver app of your choice. The good news is it can be done, and there are several great screen saver apps that work on Google TV. You don't have to be limited to Google Photos or Google's stock imagery. RELATED: How to Change the Screen Saver on the Chromecast with Google TV How to Restart a Google TV Streaming DeviceLastly, there may be an occasion when your Google TV device is not working properly. Maybe it feels a little laggy or an app is misbehaving. In many situations, a simple restart will solve the issues. This isn't guaranteed to always work, but it's a good place to start. As long as you can still navigate the Google TV interface and open the settings, you can restart the device. If that's not the case, you should unplug the device from the power to force it to restart. RELATED: How to Restart a Google TV Streaming Device One of the best things about Google TV is its simplicity. Hopefully, with these few tips and tricks, you'll get the most out of your streaming device. |
How to Create a Gantt Chart in Microsoft PowerPoint Posted: 30 Dec 2020 01:47 PM PST A Gantt chart is a bar chart that shows the schedule of a project. Thankfully, Microsoft PowerPoint provides several Gantt chart templates for you to choose from. Here's how to select a template and customize your Gantt chart. To get started, open the Microsoft PowerPoint application and select the "New" tab in the left-hand pane. In the template search box, type "Gantt Chart" and press the "Enter" button. Five Gantt chart templates will appear in the search results. Select the Gantt chart that most closely aligns with your project timeline by clicking it. We'll use the "Blue Two Year Gantt Chart" in this example. A window will appear, showing you a preview of the selected template. Click "Create." Once selected, you can begin customizing your Gantt chart which appears on the first slide of the PowerPoint presentation. The first thing you'll want to do is edit the content placeholders to reflect the content of your project. That is, edit the years and tasks. To do so, just click the text box and type your content. The icons in the top-left and bottom-right corners of the Gantt chart represent the (1) kickoff and (2) project release dates. You can edit the dates by clicking the dates and entering your project's kickoff and release dates, respectively. Once you've edited the content, you can then adjust the length (which represents the duration of the task) of the taskbars. To do so, click the taskbar to select it, and click and drag to adjust the length appropriately. You can also adjust the start/stop markers by clicking and dragging them to the respective position, as well. If you want to change the colors to match your corporate design, select the item you'd like to change the color of by clicking it, and then click "Shape Fill" in the "Shape Styles" group of the "Format" tab. From the drop-down menu that appears, select the color you'd like to use. There are also other style customization options, such as changing the color of the shape's outline by selecting a color under "Shape Outline" or even adding effects to the shape, such as giving it a shadow, by choosing an effect under "Shape Effect." That's all there is to creating a Gantt chart in PowerPoint. How you design the chart is up to you, but the general rule of thumb is to follow the corporate style guide and keep the chart as distraction-free as possible by only adding what's necessary. |
How to See How Much RAM Is in Your Chromebook Posted: 30 Dec 2020 12:21 PM PST RAM is important when it comes to how well your computer runs. Chromebooks require less RAM than other computers running Windows 10 or macOS. Still, you might feel like you need more. We'll show you how to find out how much RAM your Chromebook has. If you happen to know which Chromebook model you have, you can do a quick search for it on Google to find its specifications. However, there's an even easier way—in fact, there are two. RELATED: What Is RAM? Everything You Need to Know About System PageThe first method doesn't require any additional apps or extensions. On your Chromebook, just open your Chrome web browser and type "chrome://system" in the address bar. This will open the built-in Chrome OS "About System" page. There's a lot of information here, but we're only interested in one thing. To see how much RAM you have, look for the "meminfo" entry, and then click "Expand" next to it. In the expanded information panel, you'll see "MemTotal" and "MemAvailable" at the top. The numbers are in kilobytes (KB), which you can (roughly) translate to gigabytes (GB) by putting a decimal after the first number. For example, my Chromebook has 3,938,392 kB of RAM, so that's about 3.9 GB. Cog – System Info ViewerThe second method requires a highly rated Chrome web app. It has a cleaner interface and the info is easier to understand. To use this method, open the Chrome Web Store on your Chromebook, and then click "Add to Chrome" next to the "Cog – System Info Viewer." After you download the app, open the app drawer and launch it. The app will open and display information about your Chromebook. In the "Memory" section, you'll see the RAM listed in gigabytes. That's it! The second option is much easier. However, you can also use either of these methods to see other details, including the CPU, which version of Chrome you're running, and a lot more! |
How to Change the Screen Saver on the Chromecast with Google TV Posted: 30 Dec 2020 10:47 AM PST The Chromecast with Google TV blends the concepts of Chromecast dongles and Android TV devices. That means they have both "Ambient Mode" and screen savers. We'll show you how to use both, which requires some digging. In order to merge Chromecast and Android TV, Google shifted a lot of stuff around. However, Google TV is built on Android TV, so all of the Android TV settings are still present. One example of this is the screen saver. RELATED: What’s the Difference between Google TV and Android TV? The Chromecast with Google TV's screen saver is called "Ambient Mode," and it ties into the setup process that takes place in the Google Home app. Ambient Mode can be either a Google Photos slideshow or an Art Gallery. Google TV is still Android TV at the core, so you can install third-party screen savers from the Google Play Store. However, Google has hidden the ability to change the screen saver on the Chromecast with Google TV. We can still do it, but the method is indirect. Before we dive into third-party screen savers, let's customize the easier Ambient Mode settings. Select your profile icon in the top-right corner of the home screen. Next, select "Settings" from the pop-up menu. Scroll down and select "System." Lastly, choose "Ambient Mode." You'll see three options here: Google Photos, Art Gallery, and Experimental. Select one to use it.
That's all there is to changing Ambient Mode, but here's where things get a little complicated. "Ambient Mode" is actually just one of the possible screen savers you can use. The ability to download a third-party screen saver is still available on Google TV—you just can't do it from the Settings menu. You have to open the screen saver settings from the screen saver app that you want to use. RELATED: How to Install Apps and Games on Google TV First, we'll need to install a screen saver app. Installing an app on a Google TV device is not as simple as opening the Play Store. Read our guide on installing apps and use "screen saver" as your search term. Next, open the app. This is where the process will be different depending on the screen saver app that you want to use. What we're looking for is an option to set the app as the screen saver. Here are a few examples from some screen saver apps. And you'll notice that some apps use the term "Daydream," which was the old term for the screen saver. Keep an eye out for that as well. Whatever the setting is labeled, selecting it should bring you to the Ambient Mode screen. We can now see that "Ambient Mode" is simply a screen saver that has been enabled by default. Select "Screen Saver" to proceed. Now you can select the screen saver app of your choice. Making the selection may open the screen saver settings for that app. Lastly, you can decide how many minutes of inactivity to allow before the screen saver turns on. Select "When to Start." Choose one of the time increments. It's odd that Google has hidden the screen saver options, but at least it's still possible to use them.
