How to Check If Signal Is Down Posted: 15 Jan 2021 04:20 PM PST Is Signal down? At the start of 2021, the encrypted chat app has seen a wave of new users who want to keep their conversations private. Here's how to check whether Signal is down for everyone else. Check Signal's Status Website for Official UpdatesHead to the project's official Signal Status website (status.signal.org) to see the latest details about any outage. During the Signal outage on January 15, 2021, the Signal Foundation was keeping this page updated with the latest information about the problem: Millions and millions of new people downloading and using Signal, overwhelming the servers and requiring deployment of additional hardware. Head to Downdetector for User ReportsIf Signal's status website doesn't say there's a problem—or isn't loading—you should look at the SIgnal page on Downdetector. This website relies on reports from actual users. If other people are experiencing a problem, you'll see how many people are reporting issues. You can see a timeline of problem reports over the last 24 hours to get an idea of when the problem started, too. In other words: Even if Signal's official website hasn't been updated with any information yet, Downdetector might be your first clue that other people are experiencing problems, too. Look at Signal's Social Media AccountsSignal shares information about its status on Twitter. The Signal Twitter account is a great place to get updates about what's going on. You can read Signal's latest updates on Twitter even if you don't have a Twitter account. In fact, on January 15, 2021, the SIgnal Status website was embedding tweets to share information about what was going on.

How to Get an Always-on-Top Calculator in PC Games on Windows 10 Posted: 15 Jan 2021 09:36 AM PST Windows has had a calculator app since the beginning, and it's always been handy. In Windows 10, you can pin the calculator on top of whatever you're doing. That could be a detailed strategy game or an intense Exel session. Try Windows 10's Built-in CalculatorWindows 10's built-in calculator has an always-on-top mode, too. It can stay always on top of whatever desktop apps you're using. We're covering another cool trick in this article: Using the Xbox Game Bar's little-known widgets to get a calculator that can stay always on top anywhere in Windows, including inside PC games. RELATED: How to Keep the Calculator Always-on-Top on Windows 10 How to Get an Xbox Game Bar Calculator WidgetWidgets are one of the Xbox Game Bar's many handy features. They give you quick access to "widgets" on top of your current activity. With a simple keyboard shortcut, you can bring up a calculator and even pin it to stay on top. Microsoft added widgets to the Game Bar in Windows 10's May 2019 update. You'll need that version or newer if you want to use the calculator widget. RELATED: 6 Great Features in Windows 10’s New Game Bar The Calculator widget is not included by default, so we'll have to download it from the Widget Store before we can use it. To bring up the Game Bar, press Windows + G. Alternatively, you can click "Xbox Game Bar" in the Start Menu. (If it doesn't appear, head to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar, ensure the Game Bar is "On," and check if you've changed the keyboard shortcut that opens the Game Bar.) In the "Game Bar" toolbar, click the "Widget" menu icon at the left side of the bar. From the drop-down list, select "Widget Store" at the bottom. Scroll through the available widgets and select "Game Bar Calculator" by Mark Lierman. Click "Install" on the information page. Once it's installed, you'll see "Calculator" in the widget menu. Simply click it to open the widget. You can "star" it to put the shortcut in the toolbar as well. The widget can be dragged around the screen and it will stay in that spot whenever you bring up the Game Bar overlay. How to Make the Calculator Always-on-TopThese widgets can also be "pinned" to stay always-on-top of whatever you're doing, even when the Game Bar disappears. To do this, press Windows + G or launch "Xbox Game Bar" from the Start Menu. Once again, open the calculator widget. Now click the pin icon in the top bar of the calculator widget. That's it! The calculator won't disappear with the rest of the Game Bar. Keep in mind that you can only move it around when the Game Bar overlay is open. This is a great little trick to get easy access to the calculator. You might not need it during a gaming session or filling out a spreadsheet, but it can be handy to have a calculator at a moment's notice. |
How to “Lap” on Your Apple Watch When You Run or Cycle Posted: 15 Jan 2021 08:33 AM PST Running and multi-sport watches normally have a "lap" button for splitting your workouts into segments, whether that's laps of a track, 20-minute intervals on a bike, or the rounds of a bodyweight circuit. Here's how to use the same feature on an Apple Watch—and why you should. How to Mark a "Lap" in the Workout AppWhile you're tracking a workout with the Workout app on your Apple Watch, double-tap the screen to mark a segment. A summary will pop up, and you can keep getting your sweat on, marking off segments and laps as you need.
How to See Your Laps (and Other Segments)To see your segment splits, once you're done open the "Fitness" app on your iPhone and select your workout. Tap "Segments," and you'll see a numbered list and all the accompanying stats. Why Segments MatterAverage workout stats—like running pace and cycling speed—and individual mile splits aren't much use unless you're just doing a slow steady-state workout (or, I suppose, mile-increment repeats). For example, if you do a mile warm-up, run hard for a mile and a half, then a half-mile cooldown, the bit that matters most is between mile 2 and mile 3.5, but neither the average run speed nor mile splits in the Fitness app will tell you how fast you did it. However, if you use the lap feature on your watch, you can run your half-mile warm, double-tap to hit lap, run hard for a mile and a half, double-tap to hit lap again, then do your cool down. Then, when you look at the workout in the Fitness app on your iPhone, it'll be split into three segments: your warm-up, your workout, and your cooldown. And it's not just running and cycling you can track. If you're doing some High-Intensity Interval Training or CrossFit style circuits, you can mark off each round. |
