How to Add an Expiration Date to Emails in Gmail Posted: 13 Feb 2021 07:53 AM PST You've probably heard of sending disappearing messages in popular messaging apps, but did you know you can also set an expiration date for emails sent through Gmail, making the content within the message inaccessible after the set time? Here's how it's done. Add an Expiration Date to Gmail (Windows and Mac)You can add expiration dates to emails by using Gmail's Confidential Mode feature. When you add an expiration date to an email, the recipient can't access its contents after the set date. RELATED: How to Add an Expiration Date to Emails in Outlook (and What They’re For) To add an expiration date to an email, log in to your Gmail account using your browser of choice on Windows 10 or Mac, then click "Compose" in the top-left corner of the window. In the email composition window, enter (1) the recipient's email address, (2) the subject of the email, and (3) the content of the email. Next, at the bottom of the composition window, click the lock button that has a clock in front of it. This is the Confidential Mode icon. Once that's been clicked, the "Confidential Mode" window will appear. In the "Set Expiration" section, click the down arrow to display a list of different expiration times. The expiration times range from one day to five years. Select the desired expiration time by clicking it. The expiration date will now appear to the right of the selected time. In addition, you can also require a passcode. Choosing "No SMS Passcode" will let the recipients immediately open the email, while choosing "SMS Passcode" will require the recipient to first enter a password that they'll receive via SMS text. You'll need to enter their phone number if you choose the latter option. When ready, click "Save." The email will now have a set expiration date. A message will appear at the bottom of your email confirming this. Click "Send" to send the email. If you want to remove access to the email before the set expiration date, click "Sent" in the left-hand pane, then select the message with the expiration date from the list of emails. At the bottom of the email, click "Remove Access." Now, the recipient can no longer access the email. Add an Expiration Date to Gmail (iPhone, iPad, and Android)You can also add expiration dates to emails that you compose on the Gmail app for iPhone, iPad, and Android. To do so, log in to your Gmail account in the mobile app, then tap "Compose" in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Next, enter (1) the recipient's email address, (2) the subject of the email, and (3) the content of the email. Once this is finished, select the three horizontal dots (three vertical dots on Android) in the top-right corner of the screen. In the menu that appears, tap "Confidential Mode." In the "Set Expiration" section, tap the "Expires in #" text highlighted in blue. A list of different expiration times will appear, ranging from one day to five years. Position the one that you want in the middle of the list by swiping up or down, then tap "Done." As with the desktop version, you can also set a passcode for the email. Once you're ready, select the checkmark in the top-right corner of the screen to confirm the settings. The expiration date is now set. Tap "Send" to send the email. If you want to remove access to the email before the set expiration date, tap the three-line hamburger menu icon in the top-left corner of the "Mail" tab. From there, tap "Sent." Select the email with the expiration date to open it, and at the bottom of your email, tap "Remove Access." The recipient will no longer be able to open or access the email. |
How to Use Bangs in DuckDuckGo (to Search Other Websites) Posted: 13 Feb 2021 06:17 AM PST DuckDuckGo is a search engine that respects your privacy by not selling your search history or tracking you across the web. It also has a few nifty features, including bangs, which let you search other websites right from DuckDuckGo. Here's how. What Is a Bang?A bang, or !bang, as it is commonly known, is a term you can include with your DuckDuckGo search to limit your results to a particular website or service. The name comes from an old UNIX term for an exclamation point, which is used to invoke the feature in searches. For example, if you are searching the web with DuckDuckGo and you want to limit your results to How-To Geek, you can include "!howtogeek" with your search term. Searching for "windows 10 !howtogeek" will perform a search for "windows 10" using How-To Geek's own search engine. There are bangs for all sorts of websites, from mainstream search engines like Google (!g) to personal accounts like Gmail (!gmail). You can crunch sums or level questions at Wolfram Alpha (!wa) or search for an iPhone app on the App Store (!appstore). There's a Wikipedia bang, too (!w). Finding Useful BangsThere are currently over 13,500 bangs that you can include with your search queries. DuckDuckGo has had to purge some entries in the past for legal reasons, particularly surrounding the topic of piracy and the searching of torrent trackers. The best way to search for a bang is to start typing an exclamation mark. DuckDuckGo will open a list of suggested bangs, with suggestions becoming more relevant as you type. So if you're wondering whether a particular website has a bang, start typing an exclamation point followed by its name. If you find a website that isn't included, you can submit it for consideration. One of the more useful uses for bangs is as a quick exit point to a major search engine like Google (!g) or Bing (!b) when DuckDuckGo's results aren't as good as you'd hoped. You can also use them to search for products on Amazon (!a) or eBay (!ebay), look at restaurant reviews on Yelp (!yelp), or comb the social web via Twitter (!twitter) or Reddit (!reddit). Bangs May Put Your Privacy at RiskDuckDuckGo is a search engine that places privacy above all else. While Google and other search providers store your search history and credentials, track you across the web, and target you with personalized ads based on your browsing habits, DuckDuckGo does not. But DuckDuckGo is not responsible for how third-party websites behave. When you include a bang in your search, you're waiving DuckDuckGo's privacy policies in favor of the website you end up on. This includes data collection policies and third-party trackers. If you already use Amazon or eBay for your shopping, the use of the !a or !ebay bangs won't massively impact your privacy. However, if you rely on DuckDuckGo's strong privacy policy to protect your search activity, bangs could pose much more of a privacy problem. This includes third-party websites that use Google for their sitewide search features, as we do here at How-To Geek. As an alternative, you can try including just the name of the website to avoid triggering an off-site search (e.g. "windows 10 howtogeek"), which provides relevant results inside the DuckDuckGo search engine. Why Your iPhone Says “COVID-19 Exposure Notifications Are Available” Posted: 12 Feb 2021 02:21 PM PST There's a good chance you'll see a "COVID-19 Exposure Notifications Are Available" pop-up on your iPhone sometime soon—if you haven't already seen it. Apple and Google launched this feature last year, so why are you being prompted now? Some Local Governments Are Slower Than OthersIf you're wondering why you're seeing this message now, it's because the contact-tracing feature is dependent on apps from your local health authority that take advantage of it. In the US, this means your state government generally has to roll out its own contact-tracing app. Not all state governments have done this yet. For example, California rolled out its contact-tracing app, CA Notify, in December 2020. Oregon plans to roll out its contact-tracing app sometime before April [2021]—"hopefully," according to a government representative. Other states may not even plan to release apps that take advantage of this. You will see this notification when your local health authority rolls out its app if it hasn't already done so. If you travel between states, you may see the notification when you arrive in a location that has such an app, too. The same is true in other countries—when a local health authority has made its app available, you should see this pop-up. What Are COVID-19 Exposure Notifications?Apple and Google worked together to create a digital framework for contact tracing. Apple's solution rolled out on iPhones back in May 2020. Contact tracing is not enabled by default, and it doesn't do anything unless you choose to enable it. Also, it's just an API that your local public health authority—for example, your state government health agency—can use. If your local public health authority hasn't released an app that takes advantage of the API, there's no way to use it. (In the future, Apple and Google might integrate it directly into iOS and Android, letting it work without the app.) Basically, when you enable this feature, your iPhone will regularly send out a ping via Bluetooth. This includes a random identifier, but that random identifier changes every 10 to 20 minutes. Other devices with exposure notifications enabled will remember the list of identifiers sent by nearby devices. When someone with the app installed tests positive for COVID-19, they can report the positive test. Your iPhone will download a list of keys for devices that have reported their owners tested positive and compare your local list of identifiers against that database. If there's a match, that indicates you've been physically near someone who later tested positive, and you'll get advice on what to do—for example, you may see a recommendation that you should get tested. Overall, this is designed in a very privacy-protecting way. Government agencies don't get a log of everyone's movements from these apps, and neither do Apple and Google. Without this privacy-protecting contact-tracing system, some governments were set to roll out contact-tracing systems that monitored people's movements with GPS and stored them in centralized databases. Apple and Google aren't allowing that. They are requiring governments to use this better system. RELATED: How Your iPhone’s New COVID-19 Exposure Notifications Work What to Do When You See the AlertIf you want the notifications, tap "Continue" and you'll be prompted to install the app from your local public health authority. This pop-up functions as an alert that the public health authority in your area has made an app available—otherwise, many people wouldn't realize they had the option. Of course, it's not mandatory, and you're free to tap "Not Now" and turn down the offer. The choice is up to you, but your local public health authority probably advises that you install the app. You can choose to activate exposure notifications in the future by heading to Settings > Exposure Notifications > Turn On Exposure Notifications on your iPhone. How to Disable Availability AlertsIf you don't want to see availability alerts on your iPhone when a COVID-19 tracking app is available in your area, head to Settings > Exposure Notifications. Here, you can turn off the "Availability Alerts" option. |
How to Start Google Maps in Satellite View Posted: 12 Feb 2021 10:25 AM PST Satellite View is a feature that has been in Google Maps since the service was first released. It can be handy to see a real-world top-down view of any location. We'll show you how to start in this view by default on Android and iPhone. Before we enable Satellite View by default, you should know that it will use more data than the minimalist "Map" view. Satellite View will also be enabled during turn-by-turn navigation. Keep this in mind if you use Google Maps with a mobile data connection. RELATED: How to Change Your Car Icon in Google Maps The process for enabling Satellite View by default is a little different on Android and iPhone. We'll start with Google Maps for Android. Open the Maps app on your Android smartphone or tablet and tap your profile icon in the top-right corner. Next, select "Settings" from the menu. Scroll down and toggle the switch for "Start Maps in Satellite View." It's as simple as that. Google Maps will now be in Satellite View when you open it in the future. Things work a little differently in Google Maps for the iPhone and iPad. Open the app and tap the layers button in the top-right corner. Next, select "Satellite" from the "Map Type" section of the menu. That's it! The app will remember this selection and start in Satellite View from now on. This is a simple thing, but it can save time if you find yourself switching to Satellite View a lot. It's a little annoying that the Android app doesn't simply save your selection as the iPhone does, but at least there's a setting for it.

How to Split Data Into Multiple Columns in Excel Posted: 12 Feb 2021 09:16 AM PST If you start an Excel workbook by grouping data into the same cell and later decide to ungroup it, Excel has several easy functions that can split one spreadsheet column into two. Here's how to use both "Text to Columns" and "Flash Fill." How to Use "Text to Columns" in ExcelSelect the cells you want to split by clicking the first cell and dragging down to the last cell in the column. In our example, we'll split the first and last names listed in column A into two different columns, column B (last name) and column C (first name.) Click the "Data" tab at the top of the Excel Ribbon. Click the "Text to Columns" button in the Data Tools section. In the Convert Text to Columns Wizard, select "Delimited" and then click "Next." Delimited works great in our example, as the names are separated by commas. If the names were separated only by a space, you could select "Fixed width" instead. Check both the "Comma" and "Space" delimiters and then the "Next" button. Delimiters are simply how the data is separated. In this case, we're using comma and space because each cell in column A has a comma and a space separating the two. You can use any delimiter that fits your data set. Next, we're going to click the cell where we want to start adding the data—in this case B2—and click "Finish." This will add the first and last names to their respective columns. We could do this differently—for example, adding first names to column B and last names to column C. To do so, we'd highlight the first names in the wizard (notice the black highlight in the screenshot that signifies the active column) and then click the appropriate cell. You may notice a chime and then an inability to select the cell you want to move the data into. If this happens, just click inside the "Destination" area within the wizard or add the information manually into the Destination field. How to Use "Flash Fill" in ExcelIf you only have a few names, and you don't want to mess with the Text to Columns Wizard, you can use Flash Fill instead. This, in essence, is a smarter way to copy and paste the data into new cells. Click inside the first cell of the appropriate column—the one named "First, in our example—and type in the first name of the first person in your dataset. Hit "Enter" on the keyboard to move to the next cell down. From the "Home" tab on the ribbon, click "Editing" and then "Flash Fill." Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+E on your keyboard. Flash Fill will try to figure out what you're trying to accomplish—adding only the first names in this example—and paste the results into the appropriate cells. Second, click inside the first cell of the Last column and type in the last name of the appropriate person, and hit "Enter" on the keyboard. From the "Home" tab, click "Editing" and then "Flash Fill." Or, use the Ctrl + E keyboard shortcut. Once again, Flash Fill will attempt to figure out the data you want to fill into the column. If Flash Fill doesn't work properly, there's always Undo (Ctrl+Z). |
How to Find and Join Telegram Channels Posted: 12 Feb 2021 07:54 AM PST As far as messaging apps go, Telegram is quite unique (especially compared to Signal). You get access to third-party clients, bots, drop-in audio chats, and more. Telegram's public broadcasting channels are one such feature. Here's how to find and join Telegram channels. What Are Telegram Channels?Telegram channels are different from Telegram groups, though they do appear to be similar. For instance, Telegram groups can have up to 200,000 users, and they can be open to the public. Channels, on the other hand, are specifically designed for broadcasting messages to a large audience. Unlike groups, they are not designed for conversations. You can have an unlimited number of subscribers to a public or private channel. Public channels get their own "www.t.me/username" URL. Only the channel owner or the admin can post to the channel, each message has a view count and details of who shared the message, and channels can include rich media like video, audio, polls, and more. Find Telegram Channels OnlineYou'll find Telegram channels for anything and everything, from news organizations to sports updates, to books and movies. While you can search for a keyword directly in Telegram, there's a better way to find Telegram channels. And that's by using organized online repositories. The Telegram Channels website is an online repository of channels that are organized based on topics and interests. You'll find a list of channels for movies, books, technology, and more. From the site, you can explore multiple channels, see their latest posts, and view the number of subscribers. When you're ready, simply tap the "Subscribe" button to open the channel in the Telegram app. From the Telegram app, just tap the "Join" button to join the channel. Search and Join Telegram ChannelsIf you know the name of the Telegram channel that you want to join, you can do so directly from the Telegram app. The process is slightly different for the iPhone and Android app. On your Android smartphone, open the Telegram app and tap the search button from the top-right corner. Now, type in the name of the Telegram channel that you want to join and select it from the search results. This will open the Telegram channel. You can browse around to see the latest updates. When you're ready to join the channel, just tap the "Join" button. If you're using an iPhone, open the Telegram app and go to the "Chats" tab. Here, tap the search bar from the top of the screen. Scroll down if you don't see it. Here, type in the name of the Telegram channel that you want to join. Then, select it from the search results. To join the channel, simply tap the "Join" button. You are now subscribed to the channel. You'll find the channel in the "Chats" tab, along with all your other conversations. When a channel shares an update, you'll be notified about it. Mute Telegram ChannelsTelegram channels are a great source of the latest information on any topic. But if you have too many channels, your notifications can go haywire. Muting channels can help. And if it gets to be too much, you can always leave a Telegram channel. The process of muting and unmuting a channel is the same on both the Android and iPhone apps. From the Telegram app, open the Telegram channel in question, and from the bottom, tap the "Mute" button to mute the channel. You can come back and unmute it from the same place. Leave Telegram ChannelsThe steps for leaving a Telegram channel are different depending on your device. On your Android smartphone, open the Telegram channel that you want to leave, then tap the channel's name from the top. Here, tap the three-dot menu icon from the top-right corner. Then, choose the "Leave Channel" option. From the pop-up message, tap the "Leave Channel" option to confirm. On your iPhone, go to the Telegram channel that you want to leave and tap its name, which is found at the top of the screen. Tap the "Leave" button. From the pop-up message, choose the "Leave Channel" option. Instantly, the channel will disappear from the Telegram app. Did you know that you can send Snapchat-style self-destructing messages in Telegram? Here's how to send disappearing messages in Telegram. |
