Tired of low-quality cell phone calls? Thanks to FaceTime, you can make audio-only calls with crystal-clear high-resolution sound using an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac. Here's how to do it.

Why FaceTime Audio?

Most people think of FaceTime as a video chat service, but it also supports audio calls that operate like regular telephone calls. Your device's video camera is not used, and it stays off during the call.

FaceTime Audio is a great alternative to regular telephone calls because it uses the internet to place free calls with crystal-clear high-definition audio compared to a regular telephone call. Since it's an internet call, your Apple device can take advantage of the extra bandwidth to make the call sound much better. The only requirement is that both ends of the call own Apple devices that support FaceTime, which includes iPhones, iPads, iPod Touches, and Macs.

How to Make a FaceTime Audio Call on iPhone and iPad

To make a FaceTime Audio call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, first, make sure that FaceTime is enabled on your device. To do so, launch Settings, then tap "FaceTime." In FaceTime settings, tap the switch beside the "FaceTime" option to turn it on.

In FaceTime settings, tap the switch beside "FaceTime" to turn it on.

Next, launch the FaceTime app. On the main FaceTime screen, tap the plus button ("+").

In FaceTime on iPhone, tap the plus button to start a new call.

In the "To:" field, enter the name or number of the person you're trying to call. Then tap "Audio."

In FaceTime on iPhone, enter the person's name or number, then type "Audio."

The call will be placed. During the call, you can switch to a video FaceTime call using the "FaceTime" button, or you can disconnect by tapping the red telephone receiver icon.

While doing a FaceTime Audio call on iPhone, tap the red disconnect button to end the call.

You can also place a FaceTime Audio call by visiting your Contacts app (or the "Contacts" section of the "Phone" app on iPhone). Tap the person's name in your Contacts list.

If the contact supports FaceTime calls, you'll see a "FaceTime" entry below their phone number. Tap the blue telephone icon in the "FaceTime" section to make a FaceTime Audio call.

In iPhone Contacts, tap the phone icon beside "FaceTime" to make a FaceTime Audio call.

Note that if the other person does not have a registered FaceTime account through their phone number or email address, this option will not show up in their Contact sheet.

How to Make a FaceTime Audio Call on a Mac

Making a FaceTime Audio call on a Mac is easy. First, launch the FaceTime app. In the text box labeled "Enter a name, email, or number," type in the name or number of the person you'd like to call. If they're recognized as a FaceTime-capable contact, the buttons below will turn green. Tap the "Audio" button.

In FaceTime on Mac, enter the person's name or number, then click "Audio."

While the call is in progress, you'll see a small pop-up display in the corner of your screen. Tap the "Video" button if you'd like to switch to a video FaceTime call. To end the call, tap the "End" button.

While doing a FaceTime Audio call on Mac, click the "End" button to end the call.

One of the coolest things about FaceTime is that it works between all major Apple devices, so you can use your Mac to call iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches. With a clever trick, you can even call an Apple TV. Have fun!

The Nintendo Switch comes equipped with a headphone jack. But, with many headphones going wireless, you'll need a way to connect those Bluetooth headphones to your console. There's a dongle for that.

It's Going to Cost a Little Money

Unfortunately, the Nintendo Switch doesn't work with Bluetooth headphones out of the box. The Switch does have built-in speakers, but your neighbor on the train may not enjoy the Stardew Valley theme music as much as you do.

You can also take advantage of the built-in headphone jack if you have a pair of wired headphones, but the wire can get very annoying very quickly. The solution? Buy a Nintendo Switch Bluetooth dongle.

The team at Review Geek recommends the HomeSpot Bluetooth 5.0 adapter. The only downside is that it doesn't support pass-through charging, meaning that you can't charge your Switch without removing the dongle. If this is a must-have feature, the RG team recommends the Bionik BT dongle.

Pair Bluetooth Headphones to the Nintendo Switch

In this article, we'll use the HomeSpot adapter to connect a pair of AirPods Pro with the Nintendo Switch, but regardless of which adapter or Bluetooth headphones you're using, the process will be more or less the same.

First, you'll need to turn on your Nintendo Switch and go to the home screen. This is the screen that displays your games in a row, with several system and online options listed below.

Next, you'll need to plug the adapter into the USB-C charging port on the Nintendo Switch, which is located at the bottom of the device.

With the adapter inserted into the console, turn on pairing mode on the dongle. In the case of the HomeSpot adapter, it will automatically be in pairing mode once it's plugged into the Switch. If you're using a different adapter, the instructions for turning on pairing mode should be on the documentation that came with the product. It's generally as simple as pressing and holding a button.

Finally, turn on pairing mode on your Bluetooth headphones. If you're using AirPods Pro like us, you'll need the earbuds in the case with the case open. Then, press and hold the pair button on the back of the case until the status light on the front of the case flashes white.

After a moment, your Bluetooth headset will be paired with the Nintendo Switch and you can start gaming.

If you're just getting started with your Nintendo Switch, there are several things you may want to do to have a better experience with this amazing console. Here are nine.

How to Add Special Effects to Your Instagram Messages

Your direct messages on Instagram don't have to look so plain. Like every other Instagram feature, you can add special effects to your messages before sending them. Here's how to access and apply these effects.

Note: To get access to these effects, you will first have to turn on the Facebook Messenger integration. In addition to bringing a range of new messaging options, this also allows you to text Facebook friends right from Instagram.

Open the Instagram app on your Android device or iPhone, then visit your list of DMs by tapping the Messenger icon at the top-right corner of the home screen.

Visit your Instagram chats

Head into the conversation that you'd like to try sending texts with special effects in.

Type your message in the text box at the bottom. When you begin typing, the camera shortcut on the left will be replaced by a magnifying glass icon. Tap that button once you've entered your complete message.

Browse special effects for your Instagram text messages

At the very top of the following slide-up menu, you'll find your message displayed with four different special effects.

Apply a special effect on your Instagram message

All of these filters are interactive. So, for instance, if the recipient taps a text message sent with the heart-themed special effect, it will release a bunch of virtual hearts like balloons on their screen.

Similarly, the gift box option hides your message, and only when the other person touches it will it unwrap itself and reveal what you've sent. The confetti filter will vibrate the recipient's phone on touch.

Thanks to Facebook's cross-platform update, there's a lot more you can do to customize your messaging experience on Instagram. You can send disappearing messages in a new Vanish Mode, pick which emojis show up in the quick reactions pop-up, and turn yourself into a selfie sticker.
