What Does the Side Button on Apple Watch Do?

What Does the Side Button on Apple Watch Do?

What Does the Side Button on Apple Watch Do?

Khamosh Pathak

You might think of the Side button as a lowly apparatus used to turn off your Apple Watch, but this unassuming button hides many features, including a personalized app launcher. Here's everything that the Side button on Apple Watch does.

The Side Button Started Out With a Friends Feature

When the Apple Watch first came out in 2015, the Side button had an entirely different purpose. It was supposed to be a one-click method for you to send your heartbeats to your friends. It's not surprising that this didn't work out.

Pressing the Side button on the Apple Watch brought up the Friends screen. This screen contained your contacts who also had the Apple Watch. Here, you could tap the screen to send hearts or doodles or to place a call.

The Digital Touch feature still exists, but it's now hidden deep inside the Messages app.

The Side Button Acts as a Dock

watchOS 3 update in 2016 brought a new feature—the Dock. It was similar to the Dock that you're used to on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, but with a new twist.

When you press the Side button, it will show you a list of your recently used apps, with the most recent app at the top. Here, you can scroll down using your finger or Digital Crown to see other apps. Just tap an app to switch to it.

You Can Turn It Into a Personalized App Launcher

There's a reason you don't find yourself using the Side button often. It's because the default behavior of the Dock isn't really that useful. Most of us aren't juggling between three or four different recently used apps like we do on the iPhone or iPad.

Fortunately, there's a hidden feature that lets you turn the Dock into a personalized app launcher (so you can finally ditch the default app launcher). Instead of showing the recent apps, you can switch to your favorite apps.

To set this up, open the "Watch" app on your iPhone. From the "My Watch" tab, choose the "Dock" option.

Here, first, switch the "Dock Ordering" section to the "Favorites" option.

Now you'll see a list of pre-selected apps. Tap the "Edit" button to customize the Dock.

You can scroll down to see all available apps installed on your Apple Watch. Tap the "+" button next to an app to add it to the list.

Then use the three-line handle icon to rearrange the app order. You can add apps and arrange the layout of the Dock as you please. Once you're done, tap the "Done" button to save the layout.

Now, when you press the Side button, the Dock will show your list of pre-selected apps with a preview of what's going on in the app.

Tap an app to switch to it. The Dock remembers where you left off, so you won't end up at the top of the list next time you press the Side button.

You Can Use It for Apple Pay

If you live in a country that supports Apple Pay, you can use the Side button to quickly access your cards and pay wherever NFC is available. Just double-press the Side button to open the Apple Pay app.

How to Turn off the Apple Watch (or Contact Emergency SOS)

Lastly, the Side button is also how you turn off the Apple Watch and how you call emergency services. Press and hold the Side button, then use the "Power Off" slider to turn off the Apple Watch.

You can use the "Emergency SOS" slider to place a call to local emergency services. If you have the Medical ID set up in the Health app, you'll also see a Medical ID slider here.

What Is Google One, and Is It Worth Paying for More Storage?

Posted: 23 Feb 2021 08:53 AM PST

Google One is a service that you might have seen advertised, but aren't familiar with. You might wonder how it's different from Google Drive, and why does it require a paid subscription? We're here to answer those questions.

A Brief History of Google One

google drive and google one

Before Google One, the company offered storage subscription plans through Google Drive. These plans gave you more storage not only in Drive but in any other Google services as well, including Gmail and Google Photos.

Since Google Drive itself is a storage service, this was a little confusing. Many people mistakenly assumed that the plans were only for getting more Google Drive storage. In an attempt to simplify the plans and make their purpose more clear, Google One was launched in 2018.

At launch, Google upgraded Drive's 1 terabyte plan to 2 terabytes and kept the price at $9.99 per month. The other tiers included 100GB for $1.99 and 200GB for $2.99. Google Drive users were automatically upgraded to Google One.

What Is the Point of Google One?

When you sign up for a Google account, you get 15GB of storage for free. This storage is shared across Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. For a lot of people, this is enough storage.

However, if you find that 15GB isn't enough, that's where Google One comes in. For a monthly subscription, you can get more storage for your Google account. At the time of writing, the storage options include 100GB, 200GB, 2TB, 10TB, 20TB, and 30TB.

As previously mentioned, Google One isn't just for storing files in the cloud. Your storage allotment also applies to emails and attachments in Gmail, photos and videos in Google Photos, and everything you store in Google Drive. It's one subscription for everything.

Basically, if you are heavily invested in the Google ecosystem, Google One is something you may want to consider. It will allow you to use the services without worrying so much about storage.

What Are the Benefits?

Storage is the main purpose of Google One, but there are other benefits to the service as well. One of the biggest is the ability to share your subscription with family members.

If you set up a Family Group on your Google account, anyone in the group can share the storage with you. So if you have the 200GB plan, for example, that pool of storage is available to everyone in the group. However, everyone's files remain private.

RELATED: How to Set Up Google Family to Share Your Google Services

Google One members also get access to "Google Experts." These are people trained to help you with any of the company's products. Google Experts are essentially a higher level of customer support only for Google One members.

A benefit for people who use Android phones and tablets is Back Up and Restore. This makes it easy to back up things like device data, media from text messages, and photos and videos. You can then use Google One to restore a new device.

If privacy and security are big deals to you, Google One also offers a VPN just for members. "VPN by Google One" can be enabled on Android devices for members with the 2TB plan or higher.

RELATED: What Is a VPN, and Why Would I Need One?

There are several other benefits that vary depending on where you live. In some regions, like the U.S., you can get 40% off select hotels. Occasionally, there will also be free Google Play credit offers. You can check for these by visiting the "Benefits" tab in the Google One app.

How Much Does Google One Cost?

google one plans

Pricing for Google One will vary depending on your location. In the U.S., the plans and pricing break down like this:

  • 100GB: $1.99 per month/$19.99 per year
  • 200GB: $2.99 per month/$29.99 per year
  • 2TB: $9.99 per month/$99.99 per year
  • 10TB: $49.99 per month
  • 20TB: $99.99 per month
  • 30TB: $149.99 per month

If the 15GB of free storage isn't enough, there's plenty of plans for everyone. Compared to other cloud storage options, Google One is priced competitively. It's a great service if you're already a heavy user of Google products.

That's the core of what Google One is about. It takes all the benefits of Google's many products and gives you more freedom and features. Think of it as an upgrade to the typical Google experience.

How to Create a Progress Bar in Microsoft PowerPoint

Posted: 23 Feb 2021 07:44 AM PST

Microsoft PowerPoint Logo

A progress bar is a graphic that, in PowerPoint, visually represents the percentage of the slideshow that has been completed. It's also a good indicator of the remaining amount. Here's how to create a progress bar in Microsoft PowerPoint.

You can manually create a progress bar by inserting a shape at the bottom of each slide. The problem with this approach is that you'll need to measure the length of each shape based on the number of slides in the presentation. Additionally, if you add or remove a slide, you'll need to manually redo the progress bar on every slide in the slideshow.

To keep everything consistent and save yourself a serious headache, you can use a macro to create a progress bar. With this macro, the progress bar will automatically adjust itself based on the number of slides in the presentation.

RELATED: Macros Explained: Why Microsoft Office Files Can Be Dangerous

First, open the PowerPoint presentation that you would like to create a progress bar for. Once it's open, click the "View" tab, then select "Macros."

The "Macro" window will appear. In the text box below "Macro Name," type in a name for your new macro. The name can't contain spaces. Once it's entered, click "Create," or, if you're using Mac, click the "+" icon.

The "Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA)" window will now open. In the editor, you'll see this code:

Sub ProgressBar()

  End Sub

First, place your cursor between the two lines of code.

Next, copy and paste this code:

On Error Resume Next
With ActivePresentation
For X = 1 To .Slides.Count
.Slides(X).Shapes("PB").Delete
Set s = .Slides(X).Shapes.AddShape(msoShapeRectangle, _
0, .PageSetup.SlideHeight - 12, _
X * .PageSetup.SlideWidth / .Slides.Count, 12)
s.Fill.ForeColor.RGB = RGB(127, 0, 0)
s.Name = "PB"
Next X:
End With

Once it's pasted, your code should look like this in the editor.

Note: There are no line breaks now between the first and last line of code.

You can now close the VBA window. Back in Microsoft PowerPoint, click "Macros" in the "View" tab again.

Next, choose your macro name ("ProgressBar" in our example) to select it, then click "Run."

The progress bar will now appear at the bottom of each slide of your presentation.

If you delete a slide, the progress bar will adjust itself automatically. If you add a new slide, you'll need to run the macro again (View > Macro > Run). It's a minor inconvenience when compared to adjusting everything manually.

LastPass and 1Password are both robust password managers with a proven track record. But if you're done using LastPass, it's easy to transfer over to 1Password. Here's how to export your passwords from LastPass and import them into 1Password.

While 1Password is not a free service, its $2.99/month plan is pretty competitive with LastPass Premium which also costs $3/month. It comes with apps for all major platforms, support for two-factor authentication, and includes 1GB of encrypted document storage.

There are a myriad of reasons why you might want to switch from LastPass to 1Password. So instead of delving into it here, we suggest you read Cam Summerson's experience of switching from LastPass to 1Password at Review Geek, our sister site.

RELATED: I Switched from LastPass to 1Password (and You Should, Too)

When you have decided to make the switch from LastPass to 1Password, you won't actually need to do much. The process is as easy as exporting a CSV file from LastPass and importing it into 1Password.

Warning: Make sure that you're exporting your LastPass passwords and data on a secure personal computer. The CSV file will contain all your passwords in plain text and should be securely deleted after it has been imported into 1Password.

How to Export Passwords From LastPass

To export all your passwords in a CSV format, you will need to install and use the LastPass browser extension (you can't download CSV file using the LastPass website).

To get started, click the LastPass extension from the browser toolbar. If you can't find the LastPass extension in the Chrome toolbar, click the Extensions button to see all extensions.

Select the "Account Options" button.

Next, go to the "Advanced" section.

Choose the "Export" feature.

Now, select the "LastPass CSV File" option to download your LastPass data as a CSV file.

From the next screen, enter your LastPass master password and choose the "Continue" option.

LastPass will now download the CSV file to your default download location on your computer.

How to Import Passwords in 1Password

You can import the LastPass data quite easily using 1Password's online portal. To get started, open the 1Password website and log in to your account.

Next, click your profile icon found in the top-right corner and choose the "Import" option.

From the next screen, choose the "LastPass" option.

Now, you'll see a couple of different ways to import data from LastPass. You can open the CSV file, paste all the data, or drag in the CSV file. To upload the CSV file, click the "Or Select a File From Your Computer" link.

Then, choose the CSV file that you downloaded from LastPass and click the "Open" button.

After a couple of seconds, 1Password will let you know that the upload was successful. Click the "Show Imported Items" button to access your saved passwords.

You will now see all the imported data right in 1Password. These are instantly available across all your devices that have the 1Password app installed.

Once the export and import process is complete, you can now delete your LastPass account.

How to Use the TRIM Function in Microsoft Excel

Posted: 22 Feb 2021 01:07 PM PST

Excel Logo on a gray background

When you copy text into Microsoft Excel, it can occasionally come with characters you'd prefer to see removed, such as unnecessary spaces. Rather than remove these manually, you can use the TRIM function to do it for you.

What Is the TRIM Function?

TRIM is a very simple Microsoft Excel function that removes any extra spaces from a specific text string or from a cell containing text, leaving only a single space between words.

For instance, let's assume that a cell in Excel contains a text string like this:

This is a text string.

This string itself contains a single space between each word. However, if there were additional spaces in your text string before the first word (eg. "    This is a text string.") or if it had multiple spaces between words (eg. "This   is   a    text    string."), then you could use the TRIM function to remove these for you.

While you could do this manually, TRIM allows you to quickly remove unnecessary spaces from large sets of data, saving you time in the process.

There is one limitation, however. TRIM removes the ASCII space character (decimal value 32) from text strings, which is the standard space character used in most text.

The exception to this is for text on web pages, where the Unicode non-breaking space character (decimal value 160) is often used for spaces. TRIM won't remove this, so if this character exists in your text, you'll need to remove it manually.

RELATED: What Are Character Encodings Like ANSI and Unicode, and How Do They Differ?

How to Use the TRIM Function in Microsoft Excel

To help you understand how to use the TRIM function in Excel, we'll explore the two main methods for applying it in a new formula using sample data.

If you're creating a formula using TRIM, it has only a single argument—the text itself. This can be text you insert into the formula directly or a cell reference to a cell that contains your text.

For example, the following formula uses TRIM to remove unnecessary space characters from cell A2. To use this formula yourself, replace the cell reference "A2" with your own.

=TRIM(A2)

To use the TRIM function in Excel using a cell reference, use the formula =TRIM(A2), replacing A2 with your own cell reference.

To remove extra spaces from a text string directly, you could use the following formula, replacing the example string with your own text.

=TRIM(" This text string contains unnecessary spaces")

To use the TRIM function in Excel with a text string, use the formula =TRIM("text"), replacing "text" with your own text string.

As previously mentioned, TRIM is only designed to remove additional ASCII space characters (decimal value 32) from text strings. If you're still seeing unnecessary spaces, this is likely caused by a non-breaking space character (Unicode decimal value 160) in your text.

TRIM doesn't support these, so you'll need to manually check and remove these characters from your text if you'd prefer to use it.

How to Search for YouTube Videos by Hashtag

Posted: 22 Feb 2021 08:57 AM PST

youtube logo with hashtag

There are a lot of different ways to find something on YouTube. You can search for titles, narrow it down by channel, or even filter things by video length and date. But did you know you can search for YouTube videos by hashtag?

Hashtags are not as prominent on YouTube as they are on platforms like Twitter and Instagram. Videos that include hashtags display them above the video title. These hashtags are visible on the YouTube website and mobile apps.

hashtag on a video
Hashtag on a YouTube video

There are a couple of different ways you can find videos by hashtag. The most common method is by simply selecting a hashtag from a video you're watching. Just tap or click the hashtag above the title.

tap the hashtag

You'll be brought to a dedicated landing page for that hashtag. The page will show how many videos include the hashtag and how many channels are using it.

hashtag landing page

It's also possible to simply enter the hashtag in the YouTube search box. This isn't the best method because you'll get results related to the hashtag, not only videos that use the hashtag.

search by hashtag

If you'd like to get really specific, you can append the URL www.youtube.com/hashtag/  with whatever hashtag you want to view. This only works if you're viewing YouTube in a web browser and not in the mobile app for Android, iPhone, or iPad.

append the url

This will take you directly to the hashtag landing page (like this).

hashtag landing page

The hashtag landing pages are not sorted in chronological order. YouTube automatically keeps the "best" videos at the top.

That's pretty much it. Hashtags aren't the best way to find videos on YouTube, but they're there in case you want to use them.
