New Horizons’ from Your Smartphone Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:48 AM PST An update to Animal Crossing: New Horizons adds a reaction menu to the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app—NookLink. It's easier than ever to access all of your favorite reactions in one place and communicate with your friends and family using NookLink. What Are Reactions?Reactions in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are like visual representations of emojis (waving, cheering, fainting, etc.). Your Island Residents will even respond to your reactions with their own, providing a level of interactivity and connectedness to the system. You can pull up the reaction menu in-game by pressing "ZR" on your right joy-con controller and then selecting the "A" button on the reaction you want to use. There are eight empty slots when you first unlock this feature on your Nook Phone, and you can change reactions by registering/swapping them as favorites. To unlock reactions in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, you must progress through the game. Tom Nook will make the app on your Nook Phone accessible once you've unlocked a few other features through his series of requests. Sometimes, villagers will walk around with thought clouds over their heads. If you talk to them, they may reward you with a new reaction to add to your collection. With the new update for the NookLink app in the Nintendo Switch Online app, you can view your entire reactions collection (instead of just registered favorites in the game). The app has a keyboard and voice chat, so using emojis from the smartphone app makes sense, especially as you unlock more and more of them. The NookLink ServiceWith the NookLink service, you're able to use the Nintendo Switch Online app on your iPhone or Android smartphone to perform reactions in Animal Crossing: New Horizons without opening up the in-game reactions menu. This integrates into the existing keyboard chat feature that NookLink offers, with reactions usable right alongside chat. The app requires a Nintendo Online subscription. After you've downloaded the app, you can access NookLink once you have linked your account. To activate a reaction in the game, just tap the reaction icon twice in the NookLink app. How to Use Reactions with NookLinkOnce you have installed the Nintendo Switch Online app on your smartphone and signed in to your Nintendo Account, you can access the NookLink Reactions feature. You must first update Animal Crossing: New Horizons to version 5.1 or higher. RELATED: How to Update Nintendo Switch Games To use the "Reaction" feature, you will need to install the latest firmware version for Animal Crossing: New Horizons and be connected to the internet while using Nintendo Switch Online on your smartphone. Launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons from the Home screen on your Nintendo Switch and then press the "-" button on your left joy-con to access your settings. When Tom Nook appears, ask about the NookLink settings. Select the "Upload My Play Data" option. This action will sync your Animal Crossing: New Horizons data to the NookLink app. Once your play data has been uploaded, you can use your reactions, and other features, in the NookLink app. Now, launch Animal Crossing: New Horizons on your Nintendo Switch and head over to the airport. The airport in Animal Crossing: New Horizons is another feature locked behind the game story, so be sure to finish Tom Nook's request to unlock the airport. The airport is an essential feature to invite visitors to your island. Once you're at the airport, talk to Orville at the desk and select "I Want Visitors" from the menu. Select "Online Play" to connect to the internet and Orville will open the gates for you. Once the gates are open, you can start using the voice-chat and reactions menu from the NookLink app. Currently, there is no way to use reactions using the Nintendo Switch Online smartphone app without opening your island for visitors first. Use the Nintendo Switch Online App on Your SmartphoneWith your gates open, launch the Nintendo Switch Online app on your smartphone. The app will list a few games at the bottom. Select Animal Crossing: New Horizons and wait for the NookLink menu to appear. Select "Reactions" from the menu. You can view your full collection of unlocked in-game reactions. To use a reaction using the Nintendo Switch Online app, tap the one you want to use and press "Send." Alternatively, you can double-tap the reaction you want to use, and it will send immediately. Your character in Animal Crossing: New Horizons will immediately act out the reaction. You can also choose recently used reactions from the top menu for easy access. |
How to Get the HTC Sense Weather & Clock Widget on Android Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:46 AM PST The Android operating system has produced some iconic designs. One of the most notable of the early Android days was the HTC Sense Weather & Clock widget. If you remember this classic widget fondly, you can use it today on your Android smartphone. You won't need an HTC phone to use these widgets. Third-party developers have recreated the HTC Weather & Clock widget for anyone to use. All you need to do is download them from the Google Play Store. Sense Flip Clock & WeatherThe first widget we'll try is called "Sense Flip Clock & Weather." This one is modeled after the early versions of the HTC Sense widget. Install the app on your Android device from the Play Store and open it to begin. First, you'll need to grant the app location permission to display the weather. Tap "OK." Give the app your preferred permission to proceed. If you want the widget to always display the most accurate weather, you have to go into your Settings menu and grant the app permission to access your location all the time. You'll now see a pretty typical weather app interface, but what we're after is the widget. Go to your phone or tablet's home screen and tap and hold on a blank spot to bring up the menu. Depending on the home screen launcher you use, the menu may appear different. Look for "Add Widgets" or "Widgets" and select it. Scroll through the list of widgets and locate "Sense Flip Clock & Weather." There are a number of different widget sizes to choose from. Tap and hold the one you want to use. Drag the widget to the spot you want on the home screen and let go to drop it into place. Sense V2 Flip Clock & WeatherThe next widget we'll try is called "Sense V2 Flip Clock & Weather." This one is modeled after the later versions of the HTC Sense widget. It's a little more modern looking. Install the app from the Google Play Store and open it to begin. Like the previous widget, we need to give it location access to display the weather. Tap "OK" to proceed. Choose your preferred location access permission. Follow the steps from the previous widget to go to the home screen, open the "Widget" menu, find "Sense V2 Flip Clock & Weather," and drop it on your smartphone or tablet's home screen. That's all there is to it! Now you have some classic Android nostalgia on your home screen. |
How to Quickly Resize the Dock on Mac Posted: 31 Oct 2020 06:10 PM PDT The Dock comes in handy as a Mac application launcher, but sometimes it's too big or too small. Luckily, there are two ways to resize the Dock on your Mac—including one easy way that many people don't know about. Here's how to quickly resize your Dock in macOS. How to Quickly Resize the Dock Using the Mouse PointerFirst, here's the quick-and-easy way to resize your Dock. While viewing your desktop, hover your mouse pointer over the vertical divider in your Dock, which is located between the app icons area and the file shortcuts and Trash area. In the right spot, your mouse pointer will change into an up-and-down "Resize" arrow. When your pointer looks like the up-and-down symbol, hold your primary mouse or trackpad button and drag your pointer away from, or toward, the edge of the screen to change the size of the Dock. If you move your pointer away from the screen edge, the Dock will get larger until it hits the maximum allowed size. If you move your pointer toward the edge, the Dock will shrink until it reaches its minimum size. And, you can adjust the Dock's size to any point between the two extremes. When you're done, just release the mouse or trackpad button, and the Dock will remain the size you just set. How to Resize Your Dock Using System PreferencesTo change your Dock size the traditional way (using System Preferences), right-click or Control-click on an empty area of the Dock near the divider line and select "Dock Preferences" from the menu that pops up. In Dock Preferences, use the "Size" slider to change the Dock's size on your screen. When you're done, exit System Preferences and your Dock size will remain that size until you change it again. Very handy! |
