How to Quickly Open Apps in Split View from Search on iPad Posted: 09 Jan 2021 08:38 AM PST Split View on iPad is great when you want to run two apps side-by-side. But adding a second app can be convoluted unless you're using the tablet with a keyboard. Here's how to quickly open iPad apps in Split View from search using a keyboard. You might be familiar with the traditional method of using Split View on your iPad. You swipe up to bring up the Dock and drag an app to the edge of the screen to add it to Split View. But what if the app that you want to add isn't in the Dock? How to Quickly Open iPad Apps in Split View Using Universal SearchThe Universal Search feature introduced in iPadOS 14 simplifies the multitasking feature by letting you add any app to Split View. After opening an app on your iPad, use the Command+Space keyboard shortcut on your keyboard to bring up the floating Universal Search feature. If you don't have a keyboard attached, you can use the AssistiveTouch feature (more on that in the section below). RELATED: How to Open Apps, Websites, and Shortcuts from Search on iPhone and iPad Now, search for the second app that you want to add to Split View. From the search results, press and hold the app icon and drag it out of the search window. Now, drag it to the right edge of the iPad screen, and lift your finger to dock it to the right side. You can use the handle icon between the two apps to resize them. If you want to exit "Split View," drag the handle icon to the right edge of the screen. You can use this trick to replace an existing app in Split View, or you can add an app as a floating Slide Over window as well. RELATED: How to Use Floating Apps (Slide Over) on an iPad How to Open Universal Search from Anywhere without a KeyboardAs we mentioned above, there's a workaround to get this feature even if you don't use your iPad with a keyboard. AssistiveTouch is an accessibility feature that brings a floating Home button with quick gesture shortcuts to your display. You can assign a double-tap gesture to the floating Home button that will quickly open "Universal Search" on top of the current app. To enable this feature, open the "Settings" app. From there, go to the "Accessibility" section. Here, choose the "Touch" option. Select the "AssisitiveTouch" option. Enable the feature from the top and then select the "Double Tap" option. Tap "Spotlight" from the list. Now, you can double-tap the "AssisitiveTouch" button to bring up Universal Search. Then, search for the app and drag it to the right edge of the screen to enter "Split View" (as detailed above). Did you know, you can supercharge the AssistiveTouch feature by quickly enabling it using Accessibility Shortcuts? RELATED: How to Quickly Enable or Disable AssistiveTouch on iPhone and iPad |
How to Set Up Customizable Motion Zones on Ring Security Cameras Posted: 09 Jan 2021 07:26 AM PST Amazon has made it easier to only get the motion notifications you want from your Ring cameras with customizable motion zones. While they've always had motion-detecting capabilities, these zones will help you only monitor the areas most important to you. Here's how. First, open up the "Ring" app on your iPhone, iPad, or Android device, and select the camera you'd like to customize. Next, tap the gear icon. Select the "Motion Settings" option from the camera's settings menu. If this is your first time setting up Motion Zones, you'll be met with a popup explaining them. Tap "Continue." In the "Motion Settings" menu, tap "Edit Motion Zones." The first motion zone defaults to a generic zone (highlighted blue). To make your own, tap "Add Zone." A series of dots will appear around the highlighted area. Drag them to create your first zone. The first zone will be highlighted blue. Once done, you can name the zone and then tap "Save Zone." You can now see your first zone (in this case, the one named Side Yard). If you'd like to create another, tap "Add Zone." Like the first zone, drag the dots to arrange the highlighted area for your new zone. This second zone will be highlighted red. Name it and then tap "Save Zone." You can only create three Motion Zones per camera. You're done! If you need to, you can come back and adjust the zones as needed, tweak the sensitivity of the motion zones, or even activate "People Only Mode," which only notifies you if the camera sees a person walk through one of your zones. |

How to Stop Signal From Telling You When Your Contacts Join Posted: 08 Jan 2021 03:20 PM PST When someone in your contacts signs up for Signal, you'll see a message saying that person joined Signal. Now you know you can contact them on Signal. If you'd rather not see these notifications, you can disable them. How to Disable Signal's Contact Join NotificationsSignal uses phone numbers as addresses you can reach people at. When a phone number in your contacts signs up for Signal, you'll see a notification telling you they're reachable on Signal. The name associated with that person comes from the contact information saved on your phone. To hide these alerts, open the Signal app on your iPhone or Android phone. Tap your profile picture or username initials shown at the top-left corner of the Signal conversation list. Tap "Notifications" on the Signal settings menu screen. Under Events, tap the slider to the right of "Contact Joined Signal" to disable these contact-join notifications. That's it—Signal won't let you know when your friends, family members, coworkers, or other contacts join in the future. The Signal app will still know, of course. If you tap the "New Message" icon, you'll see all your contacts who are on Signal, ready to be contacted. Can You Stop Signal From Telling People When You Join? There's no way from preventing Signal from informing people when you join. If someone has your phone number in their contacts, Signal will let them know that phone number has joined Signal. This has nothing to do with whether you allow Signal access to your own contacts. The only way to prevent this is to use a secondary phone number. Signal is designed to work with phone numbers and to be an easy-to-use replacement for SMS, which is why it works this way. If you want a chat service that doesn't use phone numbers as identifiers—for example, if you would prefer usernames that don't expose your phone number—Signal isn't the app for you. |
How to Turn On Link Previews in Signal (or Turn Them Off) Posted: 08 Jan 2021 01:14 PM PST Signal might focus on privacy and encryption, but it includes rich features found in other messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage. One such feature is link previews. Here's how to turn link previews on or off, including on a per-message basis. To generate link previews, the Signal app uses a privacy-enhancing proxy—the site you're previewing never even sees your IP address. Link previews are supported on all sites that include HTTPS encryption. How to Enable or Disable Link Previews in SignalStart by opening the "Signal" app on your iPhone or Android smartphone. Next, tap your profile picture, avatar, or username initials found in the app's top-left corner. Select the "Privacy" option from the overflow menu. Finally, toggle on or off the "Generate Link Preview" setting. You can now navigate back to the Signal app's home screen and open a conversation. The next time you send a website to someone, it will either add a link preview automatically or only send the URL, depending on if you enabled or disabled the "Generate Link Previews" setting.
How to Remove Individual Link Previews in SignalLink previews in Signal don't have to be all or nothing. If you choose to leave the "Generate Link Previews" feature on, you can remove previews before sending individual messages. As before, begin by launching the "Signal" app on your iPhone or Android smartphone. Next, select a conversation or start a new individual or group chat by tapping on the pencil icon in the app's top-right corner. Tap into the "New Message" text box and paste a URL. A preview image and text snippet will appear above the link. To remove it, tap on the "X" icon found in the top-right corner of the preview box. You can now send the link without the preview by tapping on the blue arrow button. The URL will be sent without a link preview. |
How to Cancel or Change Your Apple Fitness+ Subscription Posted: 08 Jan 2021 10:58 AM PST Every Apple Watch comes with a three-month Apple Fitness+ trial (and existing Watch owners get a one-month free trial). If your trial is coming to an end and you don't want to be charged $9.99/month or $79.99 for a full year, let's look at how you can cancel your subscription. Of course, you don't just have to be on the free trial to cancel your subscription. If you've been paying for a few months and aren't using it as much as you thought you would, you can cancel the same way. Alternatively, if you're loving Fitness+ but want to change from paying monthly to annually (or vice versa), you can do that, too. How to Cancel a Fitness+ SubscriptionTo control your subscription, open the "Fitness" app on your iPhone or iPad and go to the "Fitness+" tab. Tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then tap on your name and email address. This will show you a list of your active subscriptions. Tap "Fitness," then "Cancel Free Trial" or "Cancel Subscription." Finally, tap "Confirm" to cancel your Fitness+ subscription. If you cancel a free trial, it will end immediately. If you cancel a paid subscription, it will end on its renewal date. How to Change a Fitness+ SupscriptionOpen the "Fitness" app on your iPhone or iPad and go to the "Fitness+" section. Tap on your profile picture in the top-right corner, then tap on your name and email address. You'll see a list of your active subscriptions. Tap "Fitness," then select either "Apple Fitness+ (1 Month)" or "Apple Fitness+ (1 Year)," depending on which one you want to change to. Pay with Apple Pay and you're good to go. What Happens If You Forget to Cancel? If you forget to cancel before your renewal date, your card will get charged. You can request a refund from Apple, but the procedure is awkward. Also, there's no guarantee that Apple will grant it. However, it's still worth a shot—especially if the subscription has just been renewed. |
How to Order Food Through Google Pay Posted: 08 Jan 2021 09:32 AM PST Ordering food through mobile apps has made life much easier. The only problem is, there are dozens of different apps you can use for it. Google Pay streamlines the process by putting it all into one interface. We hope you're hungry. Google Pay received a major revamp in late 2020, and one of the new features was food ordering. Google combines several popular delivery services and pickup options into one app. This can make things a lot easier the next time you need to order some food. RELATED: What Is Google Pay, and What Can You Do With It? First, open the Google Pay app on your iPhone or Android smartphone. Make sure that you're on the main "Pay" tab. Next, scroll down to the "Discover" section and tap "Order Food." The "Order Food" page has several options. You can choose between "Pickup" and "Delivery," the type of cuisine, and filter by rating. If you're ordering delivery, you'll want to tap the down arrow next to your location to add your exact address. When you find a restaurant you like, select it to begin an order. If you're making a delivery order, you'll see the available delivery services that can make the order. Choose whichever one you want; you won't need to sign in to an account for any of these services. Select an item from the menu to customize it for your order. After you've made all the selections for the item, tap "Add to Order." Do this for all the items in your order. When you have all your items added to your cart, tap the "Go To Order" button. Look over the order and make sure that everything is correct. Now's the time to input any additional requests you may have. Tap "Checkout" when you're ready. A bunch of information will appear, including an estimate for how long the order will likely take. You can adjust your address for deliveries, enter promo codes, and change the tip amount. Scroll down farther on the page to enter your payment method. By default, it will use your main Google Pay method. Tap "Place Order" when everything looks good. Your order is now confirmed. Depending on the type of order you made, you may be able to track the progress. Now all you have to do is wait for your food to be delivered (or for the pickup time). It's very convenient to do all of this right from inside the Google Pay app. |
