How to Keep Track of the TV Shows You’re Watching Posted: 23 Jan 2021 05:39 AM PST Have you ever followed so many TV shows at the same time that you lost track? Never miss an episode again with these TV tracking apps. TV Tracking Across PlatformsIf you're a TV junkie who watches dozens of shows every year, you've likely found it difficult to keep track of everything. Shows might blur together, or you might forget which episode you watched last. You might not even realize the latest episode of your favorite series already aired until you suddenly see spoilers posted by your friends. Fortunately, an array of services are available to help you keep track of the shows you've seen, those you're currently watching, and those you want to watch. They allow you to receive notifications of new episodes and see what's coming up, all in one convenient interface. These services are available across a wide range of platforms and devices, and many will even integrate with the most popular video streaming services. Below are some of the apps you should check out. TV TimeOne of the most popular services on this list, TV Time is cross-platform, has a beautiful-looking app, and offers a robust array of features that make tracking TV shows incredibly easy. It also has an extensive library of TV shows and movies, thanks to its integration with thousands of streaming and video platforms. It's doubtful you can find a TV show that isn't in the TV Time database. It also has plenty of helpful tracking features, including notifications for new seasons and episodes, and a weekly calendar of release dates for upcoming episodes. It also has social integration so you can see what your friends are currently watching and when you can watch it. Its deep library also allows for content discovery to help you find new shows similar to those you're currently watching. RELATED: How to Search All Streaming Services For a Movie or TV Show TraktIf you're looking for an automated solution for TV-show tracking, look no further than Trakt. If you've ever used Last.fm, you'll be familiar with "scrobbling." This is when the system automatically logs the music you play in different apps to create a comprehensive listening history. Trakt does the same thing, but with TV shows and movies. Like the music apps, it works across platforms, including streaming services, like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, local media players, like VLC, and media servers, like Plex and Kodi. It also has links to a variety of TV networks and specialty streaming networks, like Curiosity Stream. Its media server integration is extensive, including features like playback progress syncing to help you keep track of where you left off in any given video. It also has a user-sourced rating and discovery system. This shows you which movies and TV shows are currently popular to help you find new content. It's important to note that Trakt is an open-source API. This means a wide array of apps use the Trakt API to keep track of shows, along with the Trakt app. If you're curious about how to use Trakt, there are comprehensive setup guides and a list of available plug-ins and apps on the website. Episode CalendarIf you're looking for a clean, straightforward interface to see upcoming episodes, Episode Calendar is a great choice. Simply add shows to your watchlist, and the app automatically populates a monthly calendar with the new episodes premiering each day. It makes it much easier to see your viewing schedule over an extended period. It also has great browsing features. You can see the most popular TV shows on the platform, how many episodes and seasons there are of each, as well as the episode dates and descriptions. You can also see a summary of all your viewing activity on the platform, including all the shows you've finished and those you're currently watching. Episode Calendar is currently only available via its website, but it also works in mobile browsers. It can be a little confusing to set up, but again, the helpful guides on the website will walk you through integrating the service on your devices. Finally, if you're looking for an active community and don't need any bells and whistles, Next Episode might be for you. |
How to Start an Encrypted Secret Chat in Telegram Posted: 22 Jan 2021 02:19 PM PST Unlike Signal, Telegram chats aren't end-to-end encrypted. You only get server-side encryption by default. But if you want full encryption, you need to enter a separate Secret Chat mode. Here's how to start an encrypted Secret Chat in Telegram. What Is Secret Chat in Telegram? When it comes to security and privacy, Telegram is much better than popular messaging apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. Telegram is open-source, and all of its code is available online for verification by security experts. But by default, Telegram only offers server-side encryption. Telegram syncs your data (messages, media, and groups) between all your devices and uploads it to its servers by default. All the data in Telegram's server is encrypted. This means that you are safe from your internet service provider, Wi-Fi router interception, and other third parties. But Telegram itself might still be able to access your data (if they really wanted to). According to Telegram, its encryption method is the best compromise for features and security. Your large groups, channels, and media are all backed up and instantly available on all your devices, and they're encrypted in the cloud. If you trust Telegram to protect your data, you don't need to worry. On the other hand, if you want end-to-end encryption where no one (including Telegram) can access your data, you need to enter a separate mode called Secret Chat. Secret Chat mode only works for one-on-one conversations and not for groups (of any size). Once you enter Secret Chat mode, Telegram enables end-to-end encryption. This means that only you and the recipient can read the messages, as they are only stored on your devices and not on Telegram's servers. No one else can access or decipher the messages, including Telegram. Messages in Secret Chat can't be forwarded, and if you take a screenshot, the recipient is notified about it. When you delete a message, it's deleted for both users. Because Secret Chat messages are device-specific, they are only available on the device you start the chat with. If you log out of the current device, you will lose out on the Secret Chat, too. And once you delete the conversation, all the messages from the conversation will disappear as well. Once the Secret Chat begins, you can chat like you always do. Optionally, you can enable a self-destruct timer (like Instagram or WhatsApp), where all messages will disappear after a set time once the message has been displayed on the recipient's screen. RELATED: How to Send Disappearing Messages in WhatsApp How to Start an Encrypted Secret Chat in TelegramNow that you understand how the Secret Chat feature works, let's see it in practice. The steps for iPhone and Android are the same, but the interface is different. If you're using an iPhone, tap the contact's name from the top of a conversation to get started. Here, tap the "More" button. From the pop-up, select the "Start Secret Chat" option. Select the "Start" button to confirm. If you're using an Android smartphone, start by tapping your contact's name from the top of the conversation. Here, tap the three-dot menu button from the top-right corner of the screen. Now, select the "Start Secret Chat" option. From the pop-up, confirm by tapping the "Start" button. You have now entered the Secret Chat mode. Secret Chat conversations show up separately in Telegram's chat list, and you can identify Secret Chats using the lock icon next to the user's name. You can now send messages in the chat as you wish. How to Enable Self-Destruct Mode in Secret Chat in TelegramTo make your communication even more secure, you can enable a self-destruct feature. Once it's turned on, all the exchanges going forward will automatically disappear after the set time (once they have been displayed on the recipient's screen). On your iPhone, tap the stopwatch icon from the text box. Then, select the self-destruct timer that you want to set. You can set it to one second all the way to one week. Tap "Done" after selecting your timer. On your Android smartphone, tap the stopwatch icon from the top toolbar. Then, select the self-destruct timer and tap the "Done" button to set it. To disable the timer, tap the stopwatch icon again, choose the "Off" button, and tap the "Done" button. How to Exit Secret Mode in TelegramAs we mentioned above, you can carry on two different conversations with the same person on Telegram. One in the default mode and another in the Secret Chat mode. But if you are done with a conversation and you want to delete all of the data and close the Secret Chat, you might be stumped looking for an Exit or Close button. The only way to exit Secret Chat is to actually delete the conversation. To do this on your iPhone, go to the conversations view in Telegram and swipe left on the conversation. From here, tap the "Delete" button. From the pop-up, tap the "Delete Chat" button to confirm. If you're using an Android smartphone, open the Secret Chat and tap the three-dot menu icon from the top toolbar. Here, choose the "Delete Chat" button. From the pop-up, select the "Delete Chat" option. The Secret Chat conversation will now be deleted from your device. If you want to send end-to-end encrypted messages again, you'll have to start the Secret Chat again. If you want end-to-end encryption for all your chats and groups, Signal might be a good option for you. Here's how Signal compares to Telegram when it comes to privacy and feature set. |
How to Delist Your Facebook Profile From Search Engines Posted: 22 Jan 2021 10:09 AM PST Facebook allows search engines like Google to index your profile and publicly available information. But if you don't want people to be able to look up your social profile outside of Facebook, you can choose to delist it. Here's how. First, head over to Facebook's website using your Windows 10, Mac, or Linux desktop browser and sign in to your account. Next, click the arrow in the top-right corner of the social network to reveal a dropdown menu, then select "Settings & Privacy." Navigate to "Settings." Select "Privacy" from the column on the left. Scroll down toward the bottom of the page, and under the "How people can find and contact you" section, you'll find an option called "Do you want search engines outside of Facebook to link to your Profile?" Click the blue "Edit" button located beside that option. Uncheck the box next to "Allow search engines outside of Facebook to link to your Profile." In the following pop-up message, click "Turn Off." Finally, select the "Close" option to save your new preference. That's it. Now, Facebook will prevent search engines outside of the social network from linking your profile in their results.
To further reduce your digital footprint, you can limit your posts' visibility and lock down your Facebook account. |
Posted: 22 Jan 2021 09:02 AM PST If you're interested in Google products, you may have stumbled upon the Google Store. This is the place where Google sells its own products, but it wasn't always like that. The Google Store has an interesting history. The Google Store Started as a TabGoogle's first "store" was the Android market. It existed only on Android devices, and it delivered Android apps and games. Google slowly added different types of content to the Android Market, which necessitated a change in branding to "Google Play." The Google Play Store is home to many different types of digital goods, but it was also where Google sold Nexus phones and tablets, Chromecasts, and Chromebooks. All of this lived under the "Devices" tab on the Play Store. Eventually, Google took a bigger interest in making its own hardware, which led to the creation of the Google Store. "Made by Google"The first hardware device developed entirely in-house by Google was the Nexus Q media device in 2012. At this time, the only hardware being sold on the Play Store was Nexus devices, which weren't built by Google itself. The Nexus Q ultimately failed, but it did lead to the Chromecast in 2013, which was a massive success. That was just the beginning of Google's interest in developing its own products in-house and acquiring hardware companies. The Google Store officially launched in March 2015. Up until this point, Google had only dabbled in hardware devices. However, the company was preparing to make a big push into this area, and the launch of the Google Store was an important step. The next year, Google introduced the first Pixel phones and the original Google Home smart speaker. This kicked off the "Made by Google" initiative. Since then, dozens of products have been launched in the Google Store. It's home to Pixel phones, Nest smart devices, Chromecasts, Chromebooks, and accessories. What Can You Buy in the Google Store?Google distributes digital goods in the Play Store, but as previously mentioned, its hardware is sold in the Google Store. That includes Pixel phones, Chromebooks, Chromecasts, Nest devices, and some products from Google partners. The Google Store isn't the only place available to buy Google hardware. Many of its products can be purchased at retailers, including Best Buy and Amazon. However, if you buy a Google product from Google itself, you'll usually get better customer support and replacements. An equivalent of the Google Store would be the Apple Store. It's a store owned by the company that makes the products that are sold. In both examples, you may find some products from third parties, but the majority of the items are from the store owner. Unlike the Apple Store, the Google Store is only an online market. There are no "brick-and-mortar" Google Stores in the real world. You may find specific Google sections or "pop-up shops" in stores like Best Buy, but that's it. The one exception to the "physical products" rule in the Google Store is subscriptions. You can purchase subscriptions to services such as Google One, Stadia Pro, and YouTube Premium. These are subscriptions that typically go along with physical products. Google's description of the Google Store is the simplest explanation for its purpose: "Google Store for Google Made Devices & Accessories." That's really all it is. |
