Clearing out your Sent Items folder in Microsoft Outlook normally means either deleting all the emails or moving them into an archive. Whichever you prefer, here's how to automate the process by either not saving sent emails or saving them into a different folder instead.

When you send an email, Outlook sends the original email to the recipient and stores a copy of that email in the Sent Items folder. This default behavior makes perfect sense and will probably never change, but that doesn't mean you're stuck with it.

Outlook lets you turn this off so that it doesn't store a copy of your sent emails in the Sent Items folder. If you normally delete everything in your Sent Items then this is all you need.

To automatically move items into a folder other than Sent Items, you stop Outlook storing a copy to your Sent Items, and create a rule that sends a copy of all emails you send to the folder of your choice instead.

We're interested in doing this as a default for all emails, but you can do this as a one-off for an individual email. In your Outlook application, open the "Options" tab and click "Save Sent Item To," which will give you the option to specify a particular folder or not to save the sent email at all.

The "Options" tab showing the "Save Sent Item To" menu items.

But we can't think of many situations where you'd want to do this. And if you did, it would be easier to just delete or move the email from Sent Items instead. However, if you want to do this automatically for all emails, here's how.

How to Stop Saving Sent Emails

To stop Microsoft Outlook from saving a copy of your sent emails, open File > Options.

Outlook's "Options" menu option.

In the "Mail" tab, scroll down to the "Save Messages" section and uncheck "Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder."

The "Save copies of messages in the Sent Items folder" option.

Now click "OK" in the bottom-right of the "Options" window.

The "OK" button in the "Options" panel.

If you just want Outlook to stop saving sent emails, this is all you need to do.

If you want the email client to save your sent emails to another folder, you need to create a rule to tell it to do that.

How to Save Sent Emails to a Different Folder

In Microsoft Outlook, click Home > Rules > Manage Rules & Alerts.

The "Manage Rules & Alerts" menu option.

Now select the "New Rule" button.

The "New Rule" option in the "Rules and Alerts" panel.

In the Rules Wizard window that opens, click "Apply rule on messages I send" and then select the "Next" button.

The "Apply rule on message I send" option in the Rule Wizard.

The next panel is "Which condition(s) you want to check?" As we want this rule to effect all sent emails, don't check any conditions, just click "Next." A dialogue will appear asking you to confirm that this rule will affect all emails you send. Click "Yes."

The dialogue asking you to confirm that the rule will apply to all emails you send.

Choose the "move a copy to the specified folder" option and select the underlined text to choose the folder.

The "move a copy to the specified folder" option in the Rules Wizard.

In the folder list that appears, choose the folder you want your sent emails saved to and then click "OK."

The folder selection panel.

Now select the "Next" button.

The "Next" button in the Rules Wizard.

Click "Next" again, give your rule a name on the final screen, and then select "Finish."

The name of the rule and the "Finish" button in the Rules Wizard.

From now on, all emails you send will save into the folder you chose instead of Sent Items.

This rule will only work when you send emails through the Microsoft Outlook desktop client. When you send emails through the Outlook web app, they will continue to save into the Sent Items folder. There's no equivalent way to create a rule for sent mail in the Outlook web app.

As part of a suite of privacy enhancements in iOS 14, apps will have to ask before tracking your activity across other companies' apps and websites. Here's how to stop them from asking and automatically tell apps not to track you.

First, open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.

Tap the "Settings" icon on iPhone

Tap "Privacy" on the Settings screen.

In iPhone Settings, tap "Privacy."

Tap "Tracking" near the top of the Privacy screen.

In iPhone Settings, tap "Tracking."

Tap the switch beside "Allow Apps to Request to Track" to turn it off. When it's off, the switch will be grayed out and pointing to the left.

In iPhone settings, switch "Allow Apps to Request to Track" off.

After that, exit Settings. From now on, apps will no longer pop up requests asking to track you. This means that, by default, you are telling all apps not to profile you for targeted advertising—unless you've previously given them permission to do so.

To change which apps can track you for targeted advertising individually, visit Settings > Privacy > Tracking and turn off the switches beside any app listed there. It's important to note that even with this option disabled, you can still be tracked while using the web on your iPhone. Stay safe out there!

How to Add Percentages Using Excel

Posted: 11 Jan 2021 12:27 PM PST

Excel Logo on a gray background

Do you want to add percentages in Excel? There are a few ways to do this. In one sense, you could be talking about adding percentage values. Or, you could be looking for a way to add a 15% increase to a value. We'll take a look at both.

How to Add Percentages Together

You can add percentages like any other number. Choose a cell to display the sum of your two percentages. In this example, we're going to click and highlight cell C3.

click empty cell

In the formula bar, type "=sum" (without quotes) and then click the first result, the sum formula, which adds all numbers in a range of cells.

sum formula

Click in cell A3 and then command click cell B3 to select both. If you have more cells, you can click the first and then Shift + Click the last to select all cells in a range.

select both numbers

Once your chosen cells are highlighted, hit "Enter" on the keyboard, or press the checkmark in the formula bar to execute the formula and display the sum of your percentages.

How to Apply a Percentage Increase

If you actually want to add a percentage to a number—adding 15% to 200, for example—then this example is what you're looking for. It's worth noting that you can do the formula in reverse (taking 15% off of 200) by changing the "+" sign to a "-" sign in the formula below.

Insert your two figures in columns A and B. A, in our example, will be the whole number, while B will be our percentage.

add two figures

Click the empty cell next to your percentage to tell Excel where we'll be displaying the result of our formula.

click empty cell

We're going to apply a formula that tells Excel to take 15% of 83 (or 12.45) and add it to our original number (83). This will give us the desired result, a 15% increase, or 94.45. You can add the following formula to an empty cell, or the formula bar:

=A3+(A3*B3)

formula bar

Press "Enter" on the keyboard or click the checkmark to the left of the formula bar to display the result.

That's it—it's all pretty basic Excel math. Once you understand the basic concepts of Excel, you'll master simple calculations like this in no time.

The Calculator is one of the few apps that has been included in every single version of Windows. Obviously, it's changed a lot over the years. In Windows 10, the Calculator has the handy ability to stay on top.

You may not think about the Windows Calculator app often, but it's actually really nice. It has a number of different modes, including scientific, graphing, currency conversation, and more.

If you find yourself using the Calculator a lot, you should know it can stay on top of whatever you're doing. This feature only works with the "Standard" mode, but it's still handy.

First, open the "Calculator" app from the "Start Menu" or wherever you normally open it from.

open the calculator

The Calculator will open in the last mode you used. If you're not already in Standard mode, click the hamburger icon in the top left and select it.

select standard mode

Now tap the keep-on-top icon next to the "Standard" title.

keep on top icon

The Calculator will pop-out to a slightly smaller window that will always stay on top. You can drag it around by grabbing the top bar. Grab the edges of the window to slightly resize it.

That's it! Just click the "X" to close the window when you're done. No more switching back and forth between windows to do simple math.
