The Mac "System Preferences" icon.

Renewing your IP address often fixes minor glitches and connectivity issues. Your Mac will ask your DHCP server—often your Wi-Fi router—for a new IP address and connect using either the same one or a new one, depending on the details your router provides.

To find these settings, click the "Apple" icon in the upper-right corner of the menu bar, and select "System Preferences."

Click "Network" in the System Preferences window.

Choose the appropriate network and click the "Advanced" button. This works with both wired (Ethernet) and wireless (Wi-Fi) connections.

How to Use Spotify Offline on a Windows 10 PC or Mac

Posted: 08 Jan 2021 05:56 AM PST

Spotify

Streaming music services offer a huge library of music, but only if you have an internet connection. However, Spotify can download music to listen to offline. Here's how to take your music offline on Windows PCs and Macs.

What You'll Need

You must be a Spotify Premium subscriber to download music for offline playback.

Also, unlike the mobile apps, Spotify for desktop only supports downloading playlists. The playlist must be saved to your library first.

How to Go Offline in Spotify for Windows and Mac

To get started, open the Spotify desktop app for Windows 10 or Mac. You'll first need to select a playlist to download.

select a playlist to download

Next, the playlist must be added to your library. Tap the three-dot menu icon and select "Save to Your Library."

save playlist to your library

Once you add it to your library, the "Download" toggle will appear. Select it to begin downloading the playlist.

toggle the download switch

The Spotify app will say "Downloading …" while the playlist download is in progress. When it's finished, the toggle will then say "Downloaded."

download finished

Now, when your computer doesn't have an internet connection, this playlist will be available to play.

How to Put Spotify in Offline Mode

If you'd like to manually put Spotify into "Offline Mode," you can do that, too.

On Windows, click the three-dot menu icon in the top-left corner.

tap the menu icon in the corner

Select File > Offline Mode.

File > Offline Mode

On a Mac, select "Spotify" from the menu bar.

click Spotify in the menu bar

Click "Offline Mode" to make Spotify go offline.

select offline mode

That's all there is to it. Again, it's a little cumbersome that this only works with playlists added to your library. If you want to download a single album, you could put it in a specific playlist. Next time you're without Wi-Fi, you can still rock to some tunes.

Can You Use Apple Fitness+ without an Apple Watch?

Posted: 07 Jan 2021 03:04 PM PST

workout without a watch apple fitness+ option

Apple Fitness is designed for Apple Watch users. If you don't have an Apple Watch, you can kind of use the app … a little bit. But not really, here's why.

Apple Fitness+ Needs an Apple Watch to Sign Up

To sign up for Apple Fitness+, you need an Apple Watch paired to your iPhone. It's impossible to sign up for Fitness+ without an Apple Watch. However, once you're signed up, you don't strictly need an Apple Watch to do a workout.

You Don't Need an Apple Watch to Start a Workout

If your Apple Watch is out of battery, left at your parents' house, or otherwise not connected, when you go to start a workout on your iPhone or iPad (but not an Apple TV), you'll see a pop up explaining that without it, you won't be able to see your heart rate and calorie burn on the screen.

Tap "Work Out Without Watch" to start the workout anyway.

Note: Any workout you do without an Apple Watch way won't count towards closing your Activity rings as there's no recorded calories burned.

Fitness+ Is Designed Ffor the Apple Watch

Fitness+ is clearly not really designed to be used without an Apple Watch. It tracks your workout metrics and shows them on screen. For example, this makes it easy to check your heart rate. You can see how your effort compares against other people in the same workout. Apple Fitness is all about this integration.

But, if you don't have your Apple Watch on you and you want to start a workout, Apple Fitness+ won't stop you from getting your sweat on.

If you don't have an Apple Watch and you want to get started with Apple Fitness+, consider buying an Apple Watch. You can get an Apple Watch Series 3 for less than $200, and it works with Apple Fitness+

In theory, if you really wanted to sign up to Fitness+ but don't own an Apple Watch, you could borrow one, pair it with your iPhone, sign up, then reset the watch and give it back. However, that seems like a lot of work to go to so you can pay Apple $10/month for exercise videos without the extra features.

How to Insert a Word File into a Different Word Document

Posted: 07 Jan 2021 01:56 PM PST

Microsoft Word logo on a gray background

If the content of another Microsoft Word document is relevant to the content in a Word doc you're currently working on, you can embed or migrate the text of that document into your current document. Here's how.

First, open the Word document that you would like to add the contents of, or embed, another Word document to.

RELATED: How to Insert a PDF into Microsoft Word

Next, head over to the "Text" group of the "Insert" tab and click the down arrow next to the "Object" option.

A drop-down menu will appear. There are two options to choose from here: "Object" and "Text From File."

  • Object: Embeds an object such as a Word document or Excel chart
  • Text From File: Inserts the text from another file into your Word document

The "Text From File" option is essentially a quicker way to copy and paste the content of another file into this one.

Try it out by clicking the "Text From File" option in the drop-down menu.

File Explorer (Finder on Mac) will open. Find the file you would like to copy the text from, select it, then click "Insert."

The contents of that Word doc will now appear in the current Word document. This works well if there isn't a lot of content in the other Word document, but if there is, embedding it may be a better option.

Back at the "Object" drop-down menu (Insert > Text group > Object), click the "Object" option.

The "Object" window will appear. Select the "Create From File" tab and then click "Browse." The "Create From File" option will appear as a button in the bottom-left corner of the window on Mac.

File Explorer (Finder on Mac) will appear. Find the file you want to embed, select it, then click "Insert."

The file path of the selected file will now appear in the text box next to "Browse." Now, you need to decide how you want to insert the object. You have two options:

  • Link to File: Inserts the contents of the selected file into your Word document and creates a link back to the source file. Changes made to the source file will be reflected in your document. Selecting "Link to File" by itself will insert the content of the other file inside a text box.
  • Display as Icon: Inserts an icon to show the reader that there is an embedded object. This is ideal when saving space is imperative.

We'll check both options in this example.

The file will now be embedded in your Word document. Double-clicking the icon will open the second Word file.

One caveat with this method is moving the source file would break the embedded object's link. For this reason, Microsoft prevents you from being able to move the source file to a different location. If you try, you'll receive this message:

If you need to move the source file to another location, you'll need to remove the embedded link, move the source file, and then re-embed the file following the steps in this article.

How to Use Windows 10’s Built-in Screen Capture Tool

Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:53 AM PST

windows game bar recording

Windows 10 can record a video of your screen without any third-party software. Here's how to find and use Windows 10's easy-to-use Capture utility to record your display.

The Game Bar Isn't Just for Gaming

Windows 10's screen capture tool is part of the Xbox Game Bar. Despite what the name implies, the Game Bar is for more than just gaming. In this guide, we'll be using it to make screen recordings.

The tool will capture a video of your screen in H.264 MP4 format.

RELATED: 6 Great Features in Windows 10’s New Game Bar

Screen recording is part of the "Capture" widget, which is accessed through the Game Bar's "Widget Menu" feature. To use the Widget menu, you'll need Windows 10's May 2019 update or later.

How to Launch Screen Capture on Windows 10

First, press Windows+G to launch the Game Bar. Alternatively, you can open the Start menu and launch the "Xbox Game Bar" application.

(If the Game Bar overlay doesn't appear, head to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar. Ensure that the Game Bar is switched "On" here. You can also check the keyboard shortcut—you can switch "Open Game Bar" to any key combination you like instead of Windows+G.)

open Xbox Game Bar

In the Game Bar overlay screen, look for the "Capture" window.

If you don't see it, click the Widget menu icon on the left. It looks like several lines with bullet points to their left.

select the widget menu icon

A drop-down list will appear; click "Capture." The "Capture" shortcut may also be in the Game Bar toolbar.

select capture from the menu

How to Start Recording Your Screen

Look for the "Capture" widget window in the overlay. There are four buttons on the Capture widget (from left to right):

  • Screenshot: Takes a screenshot of the active window.
  • Record last 30 seconds: Creates a recording of the previous 30 seconds.
  • Start recording: Starts recording your active window.
  • Turn on mic while recording: If this option is enabled, Windows 10 will capture audio from your computer's microphone and include it in the recording.

The Game Bar's Capture widget

You'll notice text underneath the buttons. This is how you'll know what the active window is, aka what will be recorded. For example, if you're browsing the web, it will show the title of the open tab.

active window

To start recording your screen, you must first decide whether you want to use your mic, which is useful if you're trying to explain something on the screen.

enable microphone

Next, simply click the Start Recording button.

start recording

The screen recording will begin, and you'll see a little toolbar appear in the corner of the screen. It will show the running time of the recording, and it also has buttons to stop recording and toggle the microphone.

When you're finished, click the Stop icon to end the recording.

stop recording

From the Capture widget, click "Show All Captures" to see your recording.

select see all captures

Your recording will be at the top of the list. Click the folder icon to see all recordings and screenshots in File Explorer.

These recordings are stored under your Windows user folder at C:UsersNAMEVideosCaptures by default.

open the file manager

By the way, you can also start recording your screen by pressing Windows+Alt+R by default. Head to Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar to customize these keyboard shortcuts.

The Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar window on Windows 10.

That's it! Who knew Windows had such a simple screen recorder built in? Now you do.

How to Quickly Change the Font on All Slides in PowerPoint

Posted: 06 Jan 2021 01:03 PM PST

Microsoft PowerPoint Logo

Editing a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation can be time consuming, especially if you're dealing with multiple slides. If you want to change fonts across your presentation, you'll need to use the "Replace Fonts" tool or change the Slide Master template. Here's how.

These instructions work for most modern versions of Office on Windows. Mac users will need to change the slide master to change fonts across a presentation instead, but this won't offer the same blanket change approach as the "Replace Fonts" tool.

RELATED: How to Create a Slide Master in Microsoft PowerPoint

Use the Replace Fonts Tool

The easiest way to replace the fonts in your presentation is to use the "Replace Fonts" tool. This will search out and replace all examples of a font used across your presentation.

To start, open your PowerPoint presentation. From the "Home" tab on the ribbon bar, click the arrow next to the "Replace" button. In the drop-down menu, select the "Replace Fonts" option.

Replace Replace > Replace Fonts to quickly replace your PowerPoint fonts

In the "Replace Fonts" window, select the font you wish to find and replace from the "Replace" drop-down menu.

Choose the font you wish to use instead from the "With" drop-down menu and then click "Replace" to confirm.

Set the fonts you wish to replace (and be replaced with) from the drop-down menus, then press the "Replace" button.

The "Replace Fonts" tool will automatically search through your presentation and replace the fonts using the settings you selected. Click the "Close" button when you're done.

You can repeat these steps to replace other fonts, or use the Slide Master view to replace fonts used by your presentation template instead.

Use the Slide Master

While the "Replace Fonts" tool offers the quickest way to replace fonts in your presentation, you can also modify the Slide Master template to customize your fonts. This will ensure that any additional slides you create use the new font, too.

This will only apply to text in boxes that match one of the Slide Master template slides. Any additional text (in custom text boxes) won't be modified, so you'll need to use the "Replace Fonts" tool instead.

To start, open your Microsoft PowerPoint presentation and select View > Slide Master.

Press View > Slide Master to access the Slide Master template.

In the "Slide Master" view, click on one of the slide templates to view them.

To edit the fonts used by your template, select the "Fonts" button, listed under the "Slide Master" tab on the ribbon bar.

In the "Slide Master" view, press the "Fonts" button.

Choose the new font you wish to use from the "Fonts" drop-down menu.

Select a new font from the "Fonts" drop-down menu.

This will update the font used across your PowerPoint Slide Master template. Click the "Close Master View" button to apply the changes.

Press the "Close Slide Master" button to apply any template changes to your presentation.

This will update the font in any text boxes that match your slide templates. Any other fonts (such as those in custom text boxes) will remain unchanged, so you may need to repeat the steps or use the "Replace Fonts" tool instead.

Your Windows 10 Taskbar Is About to Get News and Weather

Posted: 06 Jan 2021 11:36 AM PST

Windows 10's News and Weather taskbar widget.
Microsoft

Microsoft knows what Windows 10's taskbar really needs: News and Weather. That My People icon didn't pan out, but surely all Windows users want one-click access to the latest news—right?

Microsoft is already testing this change in Insider builds of Windows 10. Starting January 6, 2021, with Insider build 21286, people testing unstable versions of Windows 10 will begin seeing the widget.

It will appear to the left of your notification area (often, but incorrectly, called the "system tray.") It will show the current weather in your area—right on the taskbar. If you click it, you'll see news headlines, more information about the weather, stock market movements, and sports scores. Microsoft calls it "an integrated feed of dynamic content such as news and weather that updates throughout the day."

Of course, you can customize what you want to see in the feed, and you can hide this Weather and News widget, just like you can hide the My People widget today. All you have to do is right-click your taskbar and uncheck it.

Microsoft is testing variations on this feature, so it may not look identical when it reaches your PC. Based on Microsoft's development schedule, we'd expect to see this feature hit stable Windows 10 PCs with a big update scheduled for Fall 2021—or, if Microsoft is really rushing, Spring 2021.
